Here at La Lilú we're working hard on our first collection of products. This collection started, after we chose our theme (you can probably guess what it is by these photos), like every other project we've worked on before, with a mood board. You too have probably been using mood boards (without even realising it) all your life, every time you made a collage of your favorite things or of things you wanted on walls, on the back of your bedroom or college dorm door, on your refrigerator, on a scrapbook or on the back of your locker door.

A mood board is a collection or collage of images, sketches, colors, swatches, textures, text, fonts, shapes and materials mixed together in a single composition, which helps you filter your ideas and translate visually and without words what's in your head and define what the project is about, in other words set the mood of the project. Whether you are or not an artist or designer, you can use the concept of mood setting to kickstart your creative thinking in a wide range of types of projects like: painting, design, architecture, web design, writing, dance, books, decorating, event planning, or even planning your dream vacation, the list goes on.

Mood boards can be done on a computer with the help of sites like Pinterest (our color your life posts are an example of digital mood boards), or with your hands collecting physical things like magazines  clippings, scraps of old books, photographs, travel or concert tickets, tags, postcards, souvenirs from a trip, etc. Even though we have a secret board on Pinterest of inspiration for our collection, we decided to make a physical one as well. You can take your objects and ideas, before you put them on your board, as we did, and move them around  on a table or on the floor, and see how everything works together and if everything fits, sometimes you’ll be surprised to see that two contrasting images could actually work well together. 

We love seeing our favorite things collaged together, it makes us feel more creative, inspired, and on track.

Do you use mood boards for inspiration? When putting together your own mood board remember to source inspiration not only on your computer but out there in the real world too, take lots of pictures, choose colors that really convey the mood of your project and if you're using text select fonts that work well with your theme without being too literal, and have fun with it!

Una "mood board" o tablero de inspiración es una colección o collage de imágenes, dibujos, colores, muestras, texturas, textos, fuentes, formas y materiales mezclados en una sola composición, que te ayuda a filtrar tus ideas y traducir visualmente y sin palabras lo que está en tu cabeza, y así definir de lo que el proyecto  trata, es decir, crear el ambiente del proyecto. Ya seas o no artista o diseñador, puedes utilizar el concepto de establecer el ambiente o estado de ánimo para activar tu pensamiento creativo en una amplia gama de tipos de proyectos como: pintura, diseño, arquitectura, diseño web, escritura,  danza, libros, decoración, planificación de eventos, y hasta para planificar las vacaciones de tus sueños, la lista continúa.

Las "mood boards" se pueden hacer en una computadora con la ayuda de sitios como Pinterest (nuestros posts "color your life" son un ejemplo de tablero digital), o con las manos recogiendo cosas físicas como recortes de revistas o libros viejos, fotografías, billetes de viaje o de conciertos, etiquetas, postales, recuerdos de un viaje, etc. Puedes tomar tus objetos e ideas antes de ponerlos en tu tablero, como hicimos nosotras, y moverlos en una mesa o en el suelo, y ver cómo funciona todo en conjunto y si todo encaja, a veces te sorprenderás al ver que dos imágenes contrastantes en realidad podrían trabajar bien juntas.

¿Usas "mood boards" para inspirarte? Cuando elabores tu propio tablero recuerda buscar inspiración no sólo en tu computadora, sino ahí fuera en el mundo real también, toma muchas fotos, elige colores que realmente transmitan el estado de ánimo de tu proyecto y si estás utilizando texto selecciona fuentes que trabajen bien con tu tema sin ser demasiado literal y ¡divertirte!
