Hi, we hope you and yours are safe, healthy, and enjoying a peaceful and gentle beginning of Spring.

The world feels heavy these days, doesn’t it? And in times like these we need, more than ever, to hold on to the little joys of everyday life. Because as we always say around here: the little things are actually the really big things.

We know that finding joy isn’t always easy. Sometimes the news, the worries, and the uncertainty can make everything feel overwhelming. Of course we should care, show solidarity, and do what we can to help others, but we also shouldn’t feel like we have to carry the weight of the whole world on our shoulders. There is nothing wrong with seeking moments of lightness, beauty, and joy even when things feel bleak. In fact, those moments might be exactly what help us keep going.

So as Spring unfolds and Easter approaches, we like to think of this season not only as a time for celebration and reflection, but also as a moment to pause, feel grateful, and, if you’re a believer, say a prayer for those who are struggling around the world.

And when joy doesn’t easily appear, sometimes we simply have to create it. That’s where a little creativity comes in. As is tradition around here, we’ve designed a new Spring/Easter printable stationery set, this time inspired by the joyful cut-paper shapes of Henri Matisse. The design features playful geometric forms and flowers that mimic his famous cutouts, all in soft pastel colours that feel perfectly at home this time of year. Hola, esperamos que tú y los tuyos se encuentren sanos y salvos, y disfrutando de un comienzo de primavera tranquilo y apacible.

El mundo se siente pesado estos días, ¿verdad? Y en momentos como estos, necesitamos, más que nunca, aferrarnos a las pequeñas alegrías del día a día. Porque como siempre decimos por aquí: las pequeñas cosas son, en realidad, las grandes.

Sabemos que encontrar alegría no siempre es fácil. A veces, las noticias, las preocupaciones y la incertidumbre pueden hacer que todo parezca abrumador. Por supuesto que debemos preocuparnos, ser solidarios y hacer todo lo posible por ayudar a los demás, pero tampoco deberíamos sentir que tenemos que cargar con el peso del mundo entero sobre nuestros hombros. Happy Spring, the season of new beginnings always feels like an invitation, to start again, to turn a fresh page (literally), to slow down, and be more intentional. It’s the perfect time to return to that reading goal you set back in January... or to gently let go of goals altogether and simply read for the joy of it. We think Spring is made for books, for sunlight reflecting on pages, and for stories that carry you somewhere else while you sit right where you are.

So as we do every season, we’ve gathered a small, thoughtful list of what we’ll be reading this season. Below, you’ll find each title along with its publisher’s description, so you can choose what calls to you. There’s something here for many kind of readers, whether you’re in the mood for something cosy, thought-provoking, escapist, or quietly inspiring.

1- Ready or Not by Cara Bastone: Eve Hatch lives for surprises! Just kidding. She expects every tomorrow to be pretty much the same as today. She loves her cosy apartment in Brooklyn that’s close to her childhood best friend Willa, and far from her midwestern, traditional family who has never really understood her. While her job is only dream-adjacent, it’s comfortable and steady. She always knows what to expect from her life... until she finds herself expecting after an uncharacteristic one-night stand. The unplanned pregnancy cracks open all the relationships in her life. Eve’s loyal friendship with Willa is feeling tense, right when she needs her the most. And it’s actually Willa’s steadfast older brother, Shep, who steps up to help Eve. He has always been friendly, but now he’s checking in, ordering her surprise lunches, listening to all her complaints, and is... suddenly kinda hot? 2- The Anthropocene Reviewed: Essays on a Human-Centered Planet by John Green: The Anthropocene is the current geologic age, in which humans have profoundly reshaped the planet and its biodiversity. In this remarkable symphony of essays adapted and expanded from his groundbreaking podcast, bestselling author John Green reviews different facets of the human-centered planet on a five-star scale—from the QWERTY keyboard and sunsets to Canada geese and Penguins of Madagascar. Funny, complex, and rich with detail, the reviews chart the contradictions of contemporary humanity. As a species, we are both far too powerful and not nearly powerful enough, a paradox that came into sharp focus as we faced a global pandemic that both separated us and bound us together.

3- The Correspondent by Virginia Evans: Sybil Van Antwerp has throughout her life used letters to make sense of the world and her place in it. Most mornings, around half past ten, Sybil sits down to write letters—to her brother, to her best friend, to the president of the university who will not allow her to audit a class she desperately wants to take, to Joan Didion and Larry McMurtry to tell them what she thinks of their latest books, and to one person to whom she writes often yet never sends the letter. Sybil expects her world to go on as it always has—a mother, grandmother, wife, divorcee, distinguished lawyer, she has lived a very full life. But when letters from someone in her past force her to examine one of the most painful periods of her life, she realizes that the letter she has been writing over the years needs to be read and that she cannot move forward until she finds it in her heart to offer forgiveness.

4- The Grace of Wild Things by Heather Fawcett: Grace has never been good at anything except magic—not that anyone believes her. While other children are adopted from the orphanage, nobody wants Grace. So she decides to make a home for herself by running away and offering herself as an apprentice to the witch in the nearby woods. After all, who better to teach Grace to use her magic? Surely the witch can’t be that bad. But the witch is that bad—she steals souls for spells and gobbles up hearts. So Grace offers a deal: If she can learn all 100½ spells in the witch’s grimoire, the witch will make Grace her apprentice. But if Grace fails, the witch can take her magic. 5- The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart by Holly Ringland: After her family suffers a tragedy, nine-year-old Alice Hart is forced to leave her idyllic seaside home. She is taken in by her grandmother, June, a flower farmer who raises Alice on the language of Australian native flowers, a way to say the things that are too hard to speak. Under the watchful eye of June and the women who run the farm, Alice settles, but grows up increasingly frustrated by how little she knows of her family’s story. In her early twenties, Alice’s life is thrown into upheaval again when she suffers devastating betrayal and loss. Desperate to outrun grief, Alice flees to the dramatically beautiful central Australian desert. 6- The Arrogant Ape: The Myth of Human Exceptionalism and Why It Matters by Christine Webb: Darwin considered humans one part of the web of life, not the apex of a natural hierarchy. Yet today many maintain that we are the most intelligent, virtuous, successful species that ever lived. This flawed thinking enables us to exploit the earth towards our own exclusive ends, throwing us into a perilous planetary imbalance. But is this view and way of life inevitable? The Arrogant Ape shows that human exceptionalism is an ideology that relies more on human culture than our biology, more on delusion and faith than on evidence. Lib Wright, a veteran of Florence Nightingale's Crimean campaign, is hired to keep watch over the girl. Written with propulsive tension this is a tale of two strangers who transform each other's lives, a powerful psychological thriller, and a story of love pitted against evil.

8- My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrik Backman: Elsa is seven years old and different. Her grandmother is seventy-seven years old and crazy—as in standing-on-the-balcony-firing-paintball-guns-at-strangers crazy. She is also Elsa’s best, and only, friend. At night Elsa takes refuge in her grandmother’s stories, in the Land-of-Almost-Awake and the Kingdom of Miamas, where everybody is different and nobody needs to be normal. When Elsa’s grandmother dies and leaves behind a series of letters apologizing to people she has wronged, Elsa’s greatest adventure begins. Her grandmother’s instructions lead her to an apartment building full of drunks, monsters, attack dogs, and old crones but also to the truth about fairy tales and kingdoms and a grandmother like no other.

9- Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin: In 1950s Paris, a young American expatriate finds himself caught between his repressed desires and conventional morality. David has just proposed marriage to his American girlfriend, but while she is away on a trip he becomes involved in a doomed affair with a bartender named Giovanni. With sharp, probing insight, James Baldwin’s classic novel delves into the mysteries of love and tells a deeply moving story that reveals the unspoken complexities of the human heart.

10- The Friend by Sigrid Nunez: When a woman unexpectedly loses her lifelong best friend and mentor, she finds herself burdened with the unwanted dog he has left behind. Her own battle against grief is intensified by the mute suffering of the dog, a huge Great Dane traumatized by the inexplicable disappearance of its master, and by the threat of eviction: dogs are prohibited in her apartment building. While others worry that grief has made her a victim of magical thinking, the woman refuses to be separated from the dog except for brief periods of time. Isolated from the rest of the world, increasingly obsessed with the dog's care, determined to read its mind and fathom its heart, she comes dangerously close to unraveling. But while troubles abound, rich and surprising rewards lie in store for both of them.

1- Ready or not: El amor aparece cuando menos te lo esperas de Cara Bastone: ¡Eve Hatch vive para las sorpresas! Es broma. Espera que cada mañana sea más o menos igual a la de hoy. Le encanta su acogedor apartamento en Brooklyn, cerca de su mejor amiga de la infancia, Willa, y lejos de su familia tradicional del Medio Oeste, que nunca la ha entendido del todo. Aunque su trabajo solo se acerca a lo soñado, es cómodo y estable. Siempre sabe qué esperar de su vida… hasta que se encuentra esperando un bebé tras una noche de una sola vez fuera de lo común. El embarazo inesperado resquebraja todas las relaciones de su vida. La leal amistad de Eve con Willa se vuelve tensa justo cuando más la necesita. 7- El prodigio de Emma Donoghue: Irlanda, 1840. En un pequeño pueblo se corre la voz de que una niña de once años, hija de una humilde familia de granjeros, lleva cuatro meses sin comer. Anna O'Donnell es inteligente, devota y muy discreta. En un ambiente extremadamente católico, todos la creen una santa. El caso ha llegado a la prensa, y recibe a diario visitas que dejan a la familia limosnas y regalos. 8- Mi abuela me pidió que te dijera que lo siente de Fredrik Backman: Elsa tiene siete años y es diferente. Finalmente, una postal anuncia lo inevitable: la joven regresa a París, y su regreso obligará a David a elegir entre la normalidad de una vida segura con Hella y la incertidumbre de un futuro con Giovanni.

10- El amigo de Sigrid Nunez: La protagonista y narradora de esta novela es una escritora neoyorquina que pierde de forma inesperada a su gran amigo y mentor, y de forma no menos inesperada se ve obligada a hacerse cargo de su perro –un enorme y artrítico gran danés–, que se ha quedado solo y traumatizado por la súbita desaparición de su amo. La protagonista no tendrá otro remedio que llevárselo a su minúsculo apartamento, arriesgándose a que la echen porque en el edificio está prohibido tener animales. Y así, con el trasfondo del duelo por el amigo y el amo desaparecido en trágicas circunstancias, se desarrollará la singular y bellísima historia de la amistad entre una escritora solitaria y un perro que se ha quedado sin dueño...

Se acerca el Día de San Valentín, y si conoces a La Lilú desde hace tiempo, sabes que tenemos debilidad por esta festividad. No la vemos como un truco comercial, sino como una excusa para celebrar el amor en todas sus formas: romántico, platónico, familiar, elegido y, sobre todo, la amistad. La verdad es que al mundo le vendría bien un poco más de ternura ahora mismo.
