Hi, happy World Book Day fellow bookworms! To commemorate this special day for readers everywhere we had planned to share a set of printable stationery to help you throw a book exchange party and for Val to share on her personal blog, how to decorate it; like we always do with every other holiday or special occasion.

Obviously right now we cannot get together and celebrate our love for books in person, so we've come up with a virtual version of our intended initial plan to help you throw a virtual book exchange party via Zoom (or any other video group chat application) so you can celebrate together but apart.


The idea is for you to invite your friends and family to join you in a book exchange from afar. For that, we made an invitation in a vintage book cover style that you can either print and send via snail mail or send the digital version (in jpeg) via email or your favourite messaging app. To fill out the digital version open it in any editing app that allows writing or the use of typography or fonts. We also made a bookplate for each person to write to whom they're giving the book, why they love it, and why they think the other person would love it too, send this out along with the invitation.

Once everyone has confirmed their participation via RSVP, add your names to a Secret Santa generator, here, besides people's names you can specify if you're sending each other gifts by mail, the date of the exchange, and the budget. Once everyone receives your email invitation to the name draw they'll have to click the link to join the group, where they can add their mailing address. After everyone has joined the group the names will be drawn out of a virtual hat and each member will receive another email directing them to their drawn name.


Each of your guests should pick a book they love, to send to the person they got. It would be ideal and more special to send each other physical books in the mail but due to each city's or country's current mail restrictions, you should decide as a group if someone or everyone could send an ebook instead of a physical one. Use your better judgement and take safety precautions when sending and/or receiving packages.

After everyone has received their book in the mail or digitally, then everyone grab your favourite drink and some snacks or tapas and get together on Zoom to share and chat about the books you gifted and were gifted, and party nerdy style together but apart. When deciding the date for the Zoom meeting remember to take into account the time it will take for everyone to receive their book.

¡Hola, feliz Día Mundial del Libro, compañeros ratones de biblioteca! Para conmemorar este día especial para los lectores en todas partes, habíamos planeado compartir un conjunto de papelería imprimible para ayudarte a organizar una fiesta de intercambio de libros y que Val compartiera en su blog personal cómo decorarla, como lo hacemos con cualquier otro día festivo u ocasión especial.

Obviamente en este momento no podemos reunirnos y celebrar nuestro amor por los libros en persona, por lo que hemos creado una versión virtual de nuestro plan previsto inicialmente para ayudarte a organizar una fiesta virtual de intercambio de libros a través de Zoom (o cualquier otra aplicación de chat grupal de video) para que puedan celebrar juntos pero separados.


La idea es invitar a tus amigos y familiares a un intercambio de libros desde lejos. Para eso, hicimos una invitación en un estilo de tapa de libro vintage que puedes imprimir y enviar por correo postal o enviar la versión digital (en jpeg) por correo electrónico o tu aplicación de mensajería favorita. Para rellenar la versión digital, ábrela en cualquier aplicación de edición que permita la escritura o el uso de tipografía o fuentes. También hicimos un Ex Libris para que cada persona escriba a quién está regalando el libro, por qué ama el libro que está regalando y por qué piensa que la otra persona también lo amaría, envíalo junto con la invitación.

Una vez que todos hayan confirmado su participación vía RSVP, agrega vuestros nombres a un generador de Amigo Invisible, aquí, además del nombre de las personas, puedes especificar si se enviarán regalos por correo, la fecha del intercambio y el presupuesto. Una vez que todos reciban su invitación por correo electrónico para el sorteo de nombres, deberán hacer clic en el enlace para unirse al grupo, aquí pueden también agregar su dirección de correo. Después de que todos se hayan unido al grupo, los nombres se extraerán de un sombrero virtual y cada miembro recibirá otro correo electrónico que los dirigirá al nombre que les tocó.


Cada uno de tus invitados debe elegir un libro que les encante, para enviarlo a la persona que les tocó. Sería ideal y más especial enviarse libros físicos por correo, pero debido a las restricciones de correo de cada ciudad o país en estos momentos, deberán decidir como grupo si alguien o todos podrían enviar libros electrónicos en lugar de físicos. Utilicen su mejor criterio y tomen precauciones de seguridad al enviar y/o recibir paquetes.

Después de que todos hayan recibido su libro por correo o digitalmente, todos tomen su bebida favorita y algunos bocadillos o tapas y reunánse en Zoom para compartir y conversar sobre los libros que regalaron y que recibieron, y festejen al estilo nerd juntos pero separados. Al decidir la fecha de la reunión de Zoom, recuerda tener en cuenta el tiempo que tomará que todos reciban su libro.

Hi, today is World Creativity & Innovation Day! Happy and creative day, we're sending all our creative vibes your way.

For our last post in honour of Creativity Week, we're sharing this handy and cute printable one-sheet zine to help you understand your creative prowess.

Creativity ebbs and flows, we all have had periods when we feel inspired, when ideas flow, and when we produce creative work in abundance; and then we have periods when we feel uninspired,  blocked, unmotivated, without energy to work, in which we produce very little creative work and to top it off mediocre work.

When we feel the need to create but have no energy or inspiration to work, sometimes just making small changes or engaging in a simple activity, like the 52 activities in our Random Acts of Creativity cards, are enough to reignite our creative energy. But sometimes the creative drought is deeper and no matter how much we try we can't get into the creative flow or feel unsatisfied with everything that we create. This drought can last days, weeks, months, and even years, and this is very frustrating especially when being creative is part of our job.

What can we do to fill our creativity well? From our own experience, we can tell you that the most important thing to do is to keep creating, to always show up even when we don't feel like it, and also like Marc Eastmond said in his CreativeMornings talk, to become our own muse.


And, how can we become our own muse? Well, getting to know how our creative prowess works, what inspires us, when, and how we get inspired, with who are we when we feel inspired, what are we doing, etc. And getting to know this requires a little bit of mindfulness and a bit of introspection. And there's where our "Wander. Wonder. Create." mini-zine comes in handy.


Print, fold, and keep it on hand and then pay attention and be mindful whenever you feel you're in a fertile creative period and fill it out. (check out this page to see how to fold it)


To fill the zine out you will need to analyze what are your internal intellectual (skills, expertise, knowledge, etc.), emotional (creative confidence, mental health, mood, etc.) and physical (time, rest, energy, health, etc.) resources, where they are abundant and where they are limited*; to notice the things and projects that bring you joy, to notice what or who inspires you, and finally how you use your time.


Once you know how your creative prowess works you will be able to create the conditions for creativity to flourish whenever you feel blocked or the need to create and fill your creative well. For example, if you noticed that you create best during the afternoon hours and that the smell and taste of coffee make you feel energized to create, then you know that when you feel uninspired you can set out some time in the afternoon to create and brew some coffee to stimulate your creativity. Or if you noticed that you are more creative during Spring than during Winter you can seek out the sun, look for a window in your house where the sun is streaming, put on some sunscreen and sit down to soak up the sun, also you can get fresh flowers or your green plants if you have them and put them in your creative space, to stimulate your creative juices, and so on. This is what it means to become our own muse.

Para nuestra última publicación en honor a la Semana de la Creatividad, compartimos contigo esta práctica y mona zine imprimible de una hoja para ayudarte a comprender tu poder creativo.

La creatividad sube y baja, todos hemos tenido períodos en los que nos sentimos inspirados, en los que las ideas fluyen y en los que producimos trabajo creativo en abundancia; y luego tenemos períodos en los que nos sentimos sin inspiración, bloqueados, sin motivación, sin energía para trabajar, períodos en los que producimos muy poco trabajo creativo y para colmo mediocre.

Cuando sentimos la necesidad de crear pero no tenemos energía o inspiración para trabajar, a veces solo hacer pequeños cambios o participar en una actividad simple, como las 52 actividades en nuestras cartas de Actos de Creatividad al Azar, son suficientes para reavivar nuestra energía creativa. Pero a veces la sequía creativa es más profunda y no importa cuánto lo intentemos, no podemos entrar en el flujo creativo o nos sentimos insatisfechos con todo lo que creamos. Esta sequía puede durar días, semanas, meses e incluso años, y esto es muy frustrante, especialmente cuando ser creativos es parte de nuestro trabajo.

Entonces, ¿Qué podemos hacer para llenar nuestro pozo creativo? Desde nuestra propia experiencia, podemos decirte que lo más importante es seguir creando, estar presente siempre, incluso cuando no tengamos ganas, y también como dijo Marc Eastmond en su charla de CreativeMornings, convertirnos en nuestras propias musas.


Y, ¿cómo podemos ser nuestras propias musas? Bueno, conociendo cómo funciona nuestra destreza creativa, qué nos inspira, cuándo y cómo nos inspiramos, con quién estamos cuando nos sentimos inspirados, qué estamos haciendo, etc. Y conocer esto requiere un poco de atención y un poco de introspección, y ahí es donde nuestra mini zine "Vaga. Cuestiona. Crea." es útil.



Imprime, dobla y tenla siempre a mano y luego presta atención y sé consciente cada vez que sientas que estás en un período creativo fértil y rellénala. (mira esta página para ver cómo doblarla)




Para completar la zine, deberás analizar cuáles son tus recursos intelectuales (habilidades, experiencia, conocimiento, etc.), emocionales (confianza creativa, salud mental, estado de ánimo, etc.) y físicos (tiempo, descanso, energía, salud, etc.) internos, dónde son tus recursos abundantes y dónde son limitados*; notar las cosas y proyectos que te traen alegría, notar qué o quién te inspira, y finalmente cómo usas tu tiempo.



Una vez que sepas cómo funciona tu destreza creativa, podrás crear las condiciones para que florezca la creatividad cada vez que te sientas bloqueado/a o sientas la necesidad de crear, y llenar tu pozo creativo. Por ejemplo, si notas que creas mejor durante las horas de la tarde y que el olor y el sabor del café te hacen sentir con energía para crear, entonces sabes que cuando te sientas sin inspiración, puedes dedicar algo de tiempo por la tarde para crear y preparar un poco de café para estimular tu creatividad. O si notaste que eres más creativo/a durante la primavera, entonces durante el invierno puedes buscar el sol, buscar una ventana en tu casa donde el sol esté penetrando, ponerte protector solar y sentarte a tomar el sol, también puedes comprar flores frescas o llevar tus plantas verdes si las tienes y ponerlas en tu espacio creativo para estimular tus jugos creativos, y así sucesivamente. Esto es lo que significa ser nuestras propias musas.

Today for Creativity Week we want to share with you, apropos of our previous post on intentional consumption, some of our favorite CreativeMornings talks, which will inspire and motivate you to create in a meaningful and intentional way.

You've probably already watched one or more CreativeMornings talks (we've shared their podcast and a couple of talks before), but in case you haven't heard of CreativeMornings before or have heard of it but aren't sure of what it is; CreativeMornings is a series of breakfast lectures started in 2008 by Tina Roth Eisenberg better known as Swissmiss, initially as an ongoing accessible event for the New York creative community, with a simple concept: breakfast and a short talk one Friday morning a month, free of charge and open to anyone. Today it is a global event, people in 216 cities get together, one Friday every month, to enjoy fresh coffee, friendly people, an international array of breakfast foods, and a talk given by each city's local creative talent, from design legends to hometown heroes, selected by each chapter based on a global theme. If you are a Santo Domingo local, our chapter is run by Soraya Pina and we recommend you join it and follow its Instagram account to stay up to date on upcoming talks, we've attended a few and can highly recommend you to participate.

In our "21 ways to keep the creative juices flowing" blog post and free printable poster, we included "attending events" as one of the ways we can keep our creativity fresh because we believe that attending creative conferences and talks can help us learn new things, new ways of doing things and can provide us with new tools. It can also help us expand our vision, see things from different perspectives, and make it possible to meet and connect with like-minded and interesting people. Unfortunately, right now it is not possible for us to attend in-person events due to the pandemic crisis, but luckily most of past CreativeMornings talks are available online to watch for free on their website, so we can still reap some of the benefits of attending a talk.

These are 7 of our favourite CreativeMornings talks, as we mentioned when we shared some of our favourite creativity TED talks, we believe that in our creative pursuits, it is useful to learn from others' unique points of view and experiences around their topic of expertise as well as their creative processes, especially how they turn their inspiration into ideas and their ideas into reality.

From today till the 21st it's World Creativity and Innovation Week, and as it's our tradition we'll be sharing articles around the theme of creativity throughout the week.

We're starting with the balance between consuming and creating, something we believe to be important in our times in which we are connected and have access to information 24/7 and in which we are visually and audibly over-stimulated, and can easily succumb to a never-ending cycle of consumption.

Consuming inspiration is a vital part of the creative process, as illustrator Puño says in his drawing class for kids, "to empty your head you have to fill it first", to generate ideas and get them out of our heads, first, we need resources from which to pull inspiration. To become good at anything we have to be first good consumers.

Everything that we consume, books, art, music, movies, blogs, social media posts, the natural scenery, conversations with friends... even the food we eat influences our creativity: the ideas we generate and the things we create. Mihály Csíkszentmihályi has determined from his 30 plus years studying creativity, that "creative work is comprised of five steps: preparation, incubation, insight, evaluation, and elaboration. Creativity is the final step, elaboration, which requires you to pay attention to several things including your knowledge of the field and your colleagues." And in our opinion, this knowledge can only be acquired by consuming, whether it is by reading books, or taking classes, or studying other people's work, etc., but consuming.


When we consume we are forming our own imaginarium, i.e. our own internal library of resources from where to pull inspiration, we are in a way also creating, creating new perspectives, new opinions, and new ideas. But when we consume inspiration constantly on the internet and outside of it, sometimes or oftentimes all this inspiration leads us nowhere. While it is true that discovering things that inspire us is invaluable to the creation of new ideas, if we are not doing anything with it we may be wasting our time.

Consumption provides us with the fuel for generating creative ideas but how can we turn these ideas into fruition? How can we strike a balance between the time we spend consuming inspiration and the time we spend creating? The answer to this question will probably be different for every one of us. But from our own experience, we can say that in order to ensure that the inspiration we consume will lead us to truly creative work we have to CONSUME INTENTIONALLY.

By INTENTIONAL CONSUMPTION we mean being conscious not only of the time we spend consuming, but also of whether we are consuming in the search of motivation to create something, of building our internal imaginarium, or whether we are consuming for the sake of consuming, to put off the work that we need or want to do, in other words, if we are procrastinating. And above all, with intentional consumption, we mean to take into account the quality of what we consume.


What intentional consumption allows us to do is to acquire knowledge and experience that make recognizing new ideas automatic, it allows us to recognize patterns. We should always be mindful of the quality of the experiences we consume because our creativity will reflect it. In order to create great work, we have to consume great work. What is important is to know what are the things we should spend our time consuming and the actual time we spend consuming, and this will largely depend on our field of expertise and/or the type of project we want or need to work on.

This pattern recognition ability that we develop by consuming intentionally will help us, when we consume things outside of our field like listening to music, watching the latest blockbuster, cooking, reading a good novel, politics, dancing, etc., to automatically relate or connect them to our field, inadvertently influencing our creativity. Because this is actually the essence of creativity, connecting what is seemingly unrelated.

In short, we believe that there is nothing wrong with spending our time consuming if we are aware of the quality of what we are consuming and whether we are procrastinating instead of seeking motivation to create, and the most important thing is, of course, for us to create, we have to create often and consistently. And there we will find the balance.

Desde hoy hasta el 21 es la Semana Mundial de la Creatividad y la Innovación, y como es nuestra tradición, compartiremos artículos sobre el tema de la creatividad durante toda la semana.

Comenzamos con el equilibrio entre consumir y crear, algo que creemos que es importante en nuestros tiempos en los que estamos conectados y tenemos acceso a la información las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana y en los que estamos sobreestimulados audible y visualmente, y podemos sucumbir fácilmente a un ciclo interminable de consumo.

Consumir inspiración es una parte vital del proceso creativo, como dice el ilustrador Puño en su clase de dibujo para niños, "para vaciar tu cabeza primero tienes que llenarla", para generar ideas y sacarlas de nuestras cabezas, primero necesitamos recursos de donde sacar la inspiración. Para ser buenos en algo, primero tenemos que ser buenos consumidores.

Todo lo que consumimos, libros, arte, música, películas, blogs, publicaciones en redes sociales, el paisaje natural, conversaciones con amigos... incluso la comida que comemos influye en nuestra creatividad: las ideas que generamos y las cosas que creamos. Mihály Csíkszentmihályi ha determinado a partir de sus más de 30 años estudiando la creatividad, que "el trabajo creativo se compone de cinco pasos: preparación, incubación, conocimiento, evaluación y elaboración. La creatividad es el paso final, la elaboración, que requiere que prestes atención a varias cosas incluyendo tu conocimiento del campo de experticia y de tus colegas". Y en nuestra opinión, este conocimiento solo se puede obtener consumiendo, ya sea leyendo libros, tomando clases, estudiando el trabajo de otras personas, etc., pero consumiendo.


Cuando consumimos estamos formando nuestro propio imaginario, es decir, nuestra propia biblioteca interna de recursos de donde sacar inspiración, de alguna manera también estamos creando, creando nuevas perspectivas, nuevas opiniones y nuevas ideas. Pero cuando consumimos inspiración constantemente en Internet y fuera de ella, a veces o a menudo toda esta inspiración no nos lleva a ninguna parte. Si bien es cierto que descubrir cosas que nos inspiran es invaluable para la creación de nuevas ideas, si no estamos haciendo nada con esta inspiración, podemos estar perdiendo nuestro tiempo.

El consumo nos proporciona el combustible para generar ideas creativas, pero ¿cómo podemos convertir estas ideas en realidad? ¿Cómo podemos lograr un equilibrio entre el tiempo que pasamos consumiendo inspiración y el tiempo que pasamos creando? La respuesta a esta pregunta probablemente será diferente para cada uno de nosotros. Pero desde nuestra propia experiencia, podemos decir que para asegurarnos de que la inspiración que consumimos nos lleve a un trabajo verdaderamente creativo, tenemos que CONSUMIR INTENCIONALMENTE.

Por CONSUMO INTENCIONAL nos referimos a ser conscientes no solo del tiempo que invertimos consumiendo, sino también de si estamos consumiendo en la búsqueda de motivación para crear algo, de construir nuestro imaginario interno, o si estamos consumiendo por el simple hecho de consumir, para posponer el trabajo que necesitamos o queremos hacer, en otras palabras, si estamos procrastinando. Y sobre todo, con consumo intencional nos referimos a tener muy en cuenta la calidad de lo que consumismos.


Lo que el consumo intencional nos permite hacer es adquirir conocimiento y experiencia que hacen que el reconocimiento de nuevas ideas sea automático, nos permite reconocer patrones. Siempre debemos tener en cuenta la calidad de las experiencias que consumimos, porque nuestra creatividad lo reflejará. Para crear un gran trabajo, tenemos que consumir grandes trabajos. Lo importante es saber cuáles son las cosas en las que debemos invertir nuestro tiempo y el tiempo real que invertimos consumiendo, y esto dependerá en gran medida de nuestro campo de especialización y/o el tipo de proyecto en el que queremos o necesitamos trabajar.

Esta capacidad de reconocimiento de patrones que desarrollamos al consumir intencionalmente nos ayudará, cuando consumamos cosas fuera de nuestro campo, como escuchar música, ver el último éxito de taquilla, cocinar, leer una buena novela, bailar, política, etc., a relacionarlas o conectarlas automáticamente a nuestro campo, influyendo inadvertidamente en nuestra creatividad. Porque esta es realmente la esencia de la creatividad, conectar lo que aparentemente no tiene relación.

En resumen, creemos que no hay nada de malo en invertir nuestro tiempo consumiendo siempre y cuando seamos conscientes de la calidad de lo que estamos consumiendo y de si estamos procrastinando en lugar de buscar motivación para crear, y lo más importante es, por supuesto, que creemos, tenemos que crear a menudo y de manera consistente. Y allí encontraremos el equilibrio.
