Travel Journal: Cuba

Hello again guys! Val here, today I want to share with you a little bit about my trip to Cuba as this city has become such a popular destination. It's easy to think that you have travelled in time when you are in Havana; walking its streets becomes addictive and I was captivated by their 1950’s cars so much so that I wanted my own!
This city is a treasure of the Caribbean;
the facades of its buildings, its streets, its people, the malecón and its
charming nights out make Havana a true jewel.
I travelled by myself, and stayed in a
private apartment that I rented for a week for a very good price. Transportation
is inexpensive and you can do it by walking, by bike taxis, in collective taxis
(or as we call it in DR "public cars"), the famous coconut taxis, or
in buses. Each one has its own peculiarities and forms of use.
The colors of this city, its colonial
area and its music combine for a very special atmosphere. Havana is a big city
full of color with rich architecture. With beautiful views such as Old Havana, it
is a delight to simply walk through the streets and witness the daily life of cubans,
visit local shops, buy handcrafts, admire the uniquely worn colors of the
buildings and discover all of its historical treasures. Its streets are
picturesque and something I will never forget.
One afternoon, I enjoyed a beautiful walk
on Paseo del Prado; this beautiful boulevard is surrounded by trees and
colorful buildings and is a totally recommended activity (especially if you
finish your walk on the Malecón). The Malecón (seafront) links Old Havana and
the Vedado and is the locals’ favorite place to go for a walk and have fun. There
are beautiful buildings all the way along the boulevard and it is also the
perfect place to witness an amazing Caribbean sunset.
The Capitol is the most well-known
building and a true symbol of the city. It is an impressive building that
housed the government, and since the revolution has been the headquarters of
the Cuban Academy of Sciences. It is still in remodeling since my visit.
If you want to get a taste of how the
locals live, I recommend buying a bottle of Havana Club rum and sitting on the Malecón
like any Habanero to enjoy a beautiful sunset and have a few drinks.
Also enjoy a trip to the beautiful
Varadero Beach where you can snorkel. I spent the whole day and took a tour that
included round-trip transportation and lunch; it is a must-see just a few hours
from Havana.
Cuba is so safe that walking at 2 a.m. in
the city is a pleasure. The nights in Havana are fantastic, and since tasting
the local mojitos no other mojito I have tried since seems to be good enough!
The colors, the people, the buildings’ worn facades, the colonial area and the
music; everything combines in a wonderful way and results in a very special
atmosphere. If Cuba has ever crossed your mind before, I urge you to go. Start
planning your trip right now!

Hola chicos, Val aquí, hoy quiero contarles un poco acerca de mi viaje a Cuba ya que se ha convertido en un destino tan popular, muchos se imaginarán que ir a La Habana es como viajar en el tiempo, salir a caminar sus calles se vuelve adictivo, el encanto de sus automóviles de los años 50’s me tenían loca tanto así que solo quería usar de esos.
La verdad es que esta ciudad es un
tesorito del Caribe, las fachadas de sus edificios, sus calles, su gente, el
malecón y sus noches encantadoras hacen de La Habana una verdadera joya.
Yo viajé de forma independiente y me
quedé en un apartamento privado que alquilé durante una semana por muy buen
precio. Transportarse por la ciudad no es caro y puedes hacerlo caminando, en
bici taxis, en taxis colectivos (o como le llamamos nosotros en RD “carritos
públicos”), los famosos coco taxis o en autobuses cada uno con sus
peculiaridades y sus formas de uso.
Los colores de esta ciudad, su zona
colonial, su música, todo crea un ambiente muy especial. La Habana es una ciudad
grande llena de color con una
arquitectura riquísima llena de hermosas vistas como por ejemplo La Habana Vieja, es un deleite caminar por sus
calles y ver la vida diaria de sus habitantes, visitar las tiendecitas locales,
comprar artesanías, los edificios con sus colores desgastados y descubrir todos
sus tesoros históricos, sus calles son muy pintorescas.
Disfruté de una hermosa caminata ya
cayendo la tarde por el Paseo del Prado; un hermoso Boulevard rodeado de árboles
y edificios de colores, una actividad totalmente recomendada sobre todo si
terminas tu paseo en el malecón, y hablando del malecón este une La Habana
Vieja y el Vedado, que es el lugar favorito de los locales para ir a pasear, hay
edificios hermosos en toda su extensión y se pueden disfrutar de hermosos
atardeceres.
El Capitolio es el edificio más conocido
y verdadero símbolo de la ciudad, un edificio impresionante que albergaba el
gobierno y que después de la revolución se convirtió en la cede de la Academia de Ciencias
Cubana, aún está en remodelación desde mi visita.
Si eres de los que los gusta vivir
experiencias como un local te recomiendo comprar una botella de ron Havana Club
y sentarte en el malecón como cualquier Habanero a disfrutar de un bello atardecer
disfrutando de unos ricos traguitos.
También disfruté de un paseo a la Playa de
Varadero, hermosísima donde puedes hacer snorkling y pasarte el día completo,
tomé un tour que incluía transporte ida y vuelta y almuerzo, un imperdible a
pocas horas de La Habana.
Cuba es tan segura que caminar a las 2 de
la madrugada por la ciudad es un placer y las noches de diversión en La Habana
son fantásticas, los mejores mojitos preparados con ron Havana Club, después de
probarlos ningún otro mojito me parece bueno. Los colores, la gente, sus
fachadas desgastadas, la zona colonial, la música; en fin todo crea un ambiente
muy especial, si Cuba está en tu lista ¡Adelante, planea tu viaje ya!
