12 Movies That Will Spark Your Creativity

Hello, today is World Art Day and the beginning of World Creativity and Innovation Week. To celebrate we share 1-3 posts dedicated to creativity every year.
We're starting the week off by sharing some of our favourite movies that we think will inspire you and spark your creativity.
We chose the movies on this list because we consider them imaginative visually, in plot or because of their storytelling style. Most of these movies are "old", so you may have already watched them but, if you haven't, this is your sign to watch them. If you have watched them but haven't in a while, this is the time to rewatch them because they'll inspire you, make you think and make you feel no matter how many times you watch them, we guarantee it.
A combination of great directing, acting, stunning visuals, and music makes these movies genuine works of art. Some of them are very popular, others not so much. Either way, we hope you find creative inspiration, whether rewatching or enjoying them for the first time.

Big Fish:

This movie is about Edward Bloom (played by Ewan McGregor and Albert Finney), who is dying, and his frustrated son William (Billy Crudup), who wants desperately to know the truth about his elusive father—this indefatigable teller of tall tales about his fabled and fantastic life—before it is too late.
This is a visually stunning, charming, and heartwarming (we'll probably repeat this sentiment a lot throughout this post) story of truly mythic proportions. We included the novel which inspired it in our Summer 2018 Season of Books reading list.

Their idyllic life ends when the children die in a car crash. They fight to continue their lives, but one day, four years later, Chris is also killed in a car crash. Unaware that he is dead and confused because no one will interact with him, Chris lingers on Earth. He ends up in Heaven but can't accept his fate. A guide is sent to him, in the form of his friend Albert (Cuba Gooding Jr.). Albert leads Chris on a journey through Heaven and the wonders it can bring.
This movie is a visually stunning and unforgettable epic adventure about love that transcends death, which will break your heart and put it back together.
Amélie:

Despite being caught in her imaginative world, quiet and reserved Amélie Poulin (Audrey Tautou), a young waitress who spends her days working at a Paris cafe, decides to help people find happiness. Her quest to spread joy leads her on a journey where she finds true love.
This joyful and imaginative story will not only inspire you creatively, but it will also inspire you to spread kindness and joy as well. And yes, it is visually stunning.

This movie is a World War II satire that follows Jojo (Roman Griffin Davis), a lonely German boy in the Hitler Youth whose worldview is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic. Despite his hero and idiotic imaginary friend, Adolf Hitler (Waititi), Jojo confronts his blind nationalism.
A heart-warming yet heartbreaking story that will make you cry and laugh out loud, it's imaginative and clever in plot and visually stunning. How did Waititi turn that novel into this movie? We don't know because the book is tonally quite different from the movie.
Fight Club:

Sick of his dead end, corporate career, and disgusted with the empty consumer culture of his generation, a nameless first-person narrator (Edward Norton), an insomniac and confused young man, attends support groups in an attempt to subdue his emotional state and relieve his insomniac state. When he meets Marla (Helena Bonham Carter), another fake attendee of support groups, his life seems to become a little more bearable. Serendipitously he meets Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) and together, they create a new club where young men come to relieve their frustrations by beating each other to a pulp. Two rules govern the club: no more than two men per fight, and no one is to mention Fight Club to any outsiders. Reverse psychology proves its power, as the latter rule instantaneously spreads the news of the fight club throughout the underworld sub-culture. Tyler Durden, the ringleader, quickly becomes a cult hero of epic proportions, a new messiah for a dead generation.
An original, clever and intriguing satire that makes us ask questions of ourselves and our society while thoroughly entertaining us. It's very rewatchable, you gain something each time you watch it.
A Series of Unfortunate Events:

It is a clever, funny, tragic, and visually stunning story with Lemony Snicket's superb storytelling style.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind:

A poignant look at breakups, breakdowns and breakthroughs. Joel (Jim Carrey) is stunned to discover that his girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet), has had their tumultuous relationship erased from her mind. Out of desperation, he contacts the inventor of the process, Dr. Howard Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson), to get the same treatment. But as his memories of Clementine begin to fade, Joel suddenly realizes how much he still loves her.
From the original script to the non-linear storytelling, the visuals, this is a strange funny movie and yet poignant and philosophically deep.
12 Monkeys:

Cole (Bruce Willis) is sent back in time to save the human race from a deadly virus that has forced humankind into dank underground communities in the future. Along his travels, he encounters Kathryn Railly (Madeleine Stowe), a psychiatrist and Jeffrey Goines (Brad Pitt), a patient in a psychiatry ward, who may hold the key to the mysterious rogue group, the Army of the 12 Monkeys, thought to be responsible for unleashing the killer disease. Believing he can obtain a pure virus sample to find a cure in the future, he is met with one riddle after another that puts him in a race with time.
This movie is a sci-fi masterpiece, original, intriguing and thought-provoking. Also, it's very rewatchable, with every screening you'll notice something new.
The Grand Budapest Hotel:

This movie recounts the adventures of legendary concierge Gustave H. (Ralph Fiennes) and Zero Moustafa (F. Murray Abraham), the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft of a priceless painting, a raging battle for an enormous family fortune, and a desperate chase on motorcycles, trains, sledges, and skis - all against the backdrop of a suddenly and dramatically changing Continent.
With Wes Anderson's characteristic style and attention to detail, this is a visually stunning, wonderfully weird, and quite entertaining film.
A Monster Calls:

Heartwarming and heartbreaking, this is a visually spectacular and stunningly emotional drama about loss, grief, and the power of stories.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz) revolutionized the commercialization of popular art with enigmatic paintings of waifs with big eyes. Eventually, the truth was discovered that Walter's works were not painted by him at all but by his wife Margaret (Amy Adams). The movie focuses on the success of Margaret's paintings and her tumultuous relationship with her husband, who catapulted himself to international fame while taking credit for her work.
It's a highly underappreciated Tim Burton movie about the outrageous true story of one of the most extensive art frauds in the 20th century, with his characteristical visually stunning and creepy at the same time style.
Mary Poppins Returns:

A few decades after her original visit, Mary Poppins (Emily Blunt), the magical nanny, returns to help the Banks siblings and Michael's children through a difficult time in their lives. She helps the Banks family remember the joy of what it's like to be a child and, together with her friend Jack the Lamplighter (Lin-Manuel Miranda), fun is brought back to the streets of London in celebration that everything is possible, even the impossible!
Mary Poppins is one of our childhood favourites, and we're not mad about its 2018 reincarnation. It is a lovely and stunningly beautiful movie all about play and imagination.

Esta película relata las aventuras del legendario conserje Gustave H. (Ralph Fiennes) y Zero Moustafa (F. Murray Abraham), el chico del lobby que se convierte en su amigo más confiable. La historia involucra el robo de un cuadro de valor incalculable, una batalla encarnizada por una enorme fortuna familiar y una persecución desesperada en motocicletas, trenes, trineos y esquís, todo ello en el contexto de un continente que cambia repentina y dramáticamente.

La vida del joven Conor (Lewis MacDougall) da un giro después de que su madre (Felicity Jones) enferma y se muda con su antipática abuela (Sigourney Weaver). Como escape, Conor recurre a su obra de arte y evoca un monstruo de 40 pies de altura (con la voz de Liam Neeson) que se convierte en un aliado muy improbable al guiarlo en un viaje de coraje, fe y verdad que fusiona poderosamente la imaginación y la realidad.

A finales de los años cincuenta y principios de los sesenta, Walter Keane (Christoph Waltz) revolucionó la comercialización del arte popular con enigmáticas pinturas de niños abandonados con ojos grandes. Eventualmente, se descubrió la verdad de que las obras de Walter no fueron pintadas por él en absoluto, sino por su esposa Margaret (Amy Adams). La película se centra en el éxito de las pinturas de Margaret y su tumultuosa relación con su marido, quien se catapultó a la fama internacional mientras se atribuía el mérito de su trabajo.

Mary Poppins es una de nuestras favoritas de la infancia y no estamos enojadas por su reencarnación en 2018. Es una película encantadora e increíblemente hermosa sobre el juego y la imaginación.
