There is so much to be thankful for, Thanksgiving Day is not a tradition in spanish speaking countries but we think it's beautiful and worth celebrating.

We decided to create a thankfulness tree with a dry branch, there is something about writing things down and looking at them everyday that makes them more real. A good idea to cultivate a thankful heart.

We created these printable leaves so that you can create your own tree and decorate it as you like, in the photos we're showing you some ideas of how you can do it. Each person in the family can add a daily leave with something they feel thankful for and see your tree filling with colored leaves and so many thanks. Place your tree in a spot where you can see it every day and give thanks to God, or the Universe or whatever you believe in, for all those things that make us happy.

We know this is not a new idea, but this is our version of it and we wanted to share it with you. You only have to print and cut the leaves, find yourself a dry branch and that's it!

Tenemos muchas más razones de las que pensamos para dar gracias, el Día de Acción de Gracias no es precisamente una tradición de los países de habla hispana pero para nosotras es hermosa y digna de celebrar.

Por esta razón hemos decidido hacer este árbol del agradecimiento con una rama seca, porque hay algo especial en escribir las cosas por las que estamos agradecidos y verlas cada día, las hace más reales. Es una idea genial para cultivar un corazón agradecido.

Creamos estas hojas imprimibles para que crees tu propio árbol y lo decores como gustes, aquí te mostramos algunas ideas de cómo lo puedes hacer. Cada persona de la familia puede ir agregando una hoja diaria con algo por lo que se sienta agradecida e ir viendo cómo se va llenando tu árbol de hojas de colores. Coloca tu árbol en un lugar donde lo puedan ver todos los días y dar gracias siempre a Dios, o al Universo o a lo que sea en lo que crees, por todas esas cosas que nos hacen feliz.

Sabemos que esta idea no es nada nuevo pero esta es nuestra versión y queremos compartirla, sólo tienes que imprimir las hojas que hemos diseñado y buscar una rama seca y ¡Listo!

Teagan White is a freelance illustrator and designer from Chicago, living and working in St. Paul, Minnesota. She has a BFA in Illustration from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, and her work comprises intricate drawings of flora and fauna, playful watercolors of animal characters, illustrated typography and everything in between.

The primary inspiration for her work are nature and the subtle relationship between organisms, the weather, the vegetation and wildlife of the Midwest, along with vintage botanical and anatomical illustrations, folk art and the limited color palette and stylized, flat shapes of midcentury illustrations. She has worked for clients like Target, Penguin Random House, Simon & Schuster, Disney Hyperion, Nike, and the Washington Post among others, with projects ranging from advertising and editorial to children’s books, greeting cards, and textiles.

Teagan White es una ilustradora y diseñadora independiente de Chicago, que vivi y trabaja en St. Paul, Minnesota. 5 Things To Do To Avoid Imitating The Work That Inspires Us

For a long time now we've seen how many companies big and small, have been using independents artists' work without their permission and obviously without paying to use it, and this always spark a conversation about the difference between being inspired by and copying someone's work, therefore we decided to share our thoughts on this matter.

There's nothing new under the sun, there's nothing original, we're constantly reusing, recycling, building and creating upon other people's ideas, we copy from nature, literature, architecture, music, movies, photography, fashion, etc... it's how the world works. As young artists and/or professionals we all copied and tried to imitate and emulate the work and style of the people we admire and aspire to be like, and it is ok to copy our heroes, it is how we learn. Even the great masters imitated the ones that came before them, we remember reading about how most of Dalí's first works were copies of impressionist paintings because he admired impressionists so much, but eventually he found his way and his own style. Likewise all of us in the process of practicing and copying we start to find our own voice and insert our own point of view into our work, eventually developing our own style.

When do we cross the line between inspiration and imitation?

We've all been guilty at some point in our careers of coming too close to our inspirations, without even realizing we created practically a copy of someone else's work. This isn't ok, especially if this was a professional work for which we got paid, but at least we did it with the best of intentions, even though it could have had repercussions on our careers if we got accused of plagiarism. On the other hand, it is possible for two people who don't know each other, who live in different corners of the world and who have never seen each others' work, to come up with the same solution to a specific problem and execute it in a similar way. However it is not ok to intentionally copy someone else's work and present it as ours, and worst still to get paid for it, this is not only morally wrong it is also illegal.

Also, let's get this out of the way, if you are copying other people's work as practice to get better, you don't have to make it public, don't put it up on your blog or website and don't share it on social media, copy in private. If you must share on social media (you never "must" share anything on social media) give credit, say this is your version or a copy of this person's work, or mention them as your inspiration, but never share it as your own.

So, how can we avoid imitating the work that inspires us?

Now, what we can do to avoid imitating instead of being inspired by others is "Steal Like an Artist". This frase coined by Austin Kleon on his book by the same title (if you haven't read this book yet, we recommend that you do no matter if you're not an artist, it can be applied to any profession, we can't recommend this book enough, in fact, we already recommended it here), basically means that it is ok to copy, as we already established above, but it is important to know who to copy, what to copy and how to copy, as Jan-Luc Godard said “It's not where you take things from — it's where you take them to.”

To avoid imitating we must:

1. Steal not only from one person but from many, from everyone who has ever inspired us and the people who inspired them. The more diverse our inspiration is, the less our work will look like any specific person's work. Identify what specifically inspires us about each of their work and take different things from each of them.

2. Steal not only the work of the people we admire but the thinking and process behind their work, we need to train our eyes, to observe and study their work to learn to look at things the way they do. Emulate them so deeply that their techniques mixed with our experience and skills become our own.

3. Ask someone we trust for feedback, ask what they think about what we just made, if it reminds them of something they've already seen, reveal our inspiration to them and ask if it looks anything like it, if they answer yes to one or both of this questions, is time to rethink our work and make changes accordingly, find out what we can add to make it more our own.

4. Practice our craft and then practice some more. Practice makes progress, the more times we copy the more the copy will become our own because each copy will be different from the previous one.

5. Use our own voice to transform their work, you're probably at a stage on your career where you haven't found your voice yet, that's why you're copying in the first place, but you can still try to be authentic and mindful in your work. As we said in this post about creativity, this is a phrase that a lot of people repeat but not too many live by. We need to ask ourselves are we doing something because we believe in it or are we copying because it is trendy and we know it will sell? On this note, since we mentioned earlier about Dalí copying his heroes, later in life he got permission from The Louvre to come and make a copy of The Lacemaker by Johannes Vermeer and lest just say Dalí's copy looks nothing like The Lacemaker, he then made many copies, some look more like Vermeer's than others, but the point is he always injected his point of view and previous ideas and experiences into his copies, and he always specified they were interpretations of Vermeer's painting and never claimed the original idea as his own.

In summary it is impossible for our work not to be influenced by everything around us, including the people we admire, the important thing to keep in mind is that it is ok to copy in private as practice to hone our skills, to never claim these copies as our own and sell them, to diversify our inspirations, to look for inspiration not only in contemporaries but in history as well and finally to practice as much as we can.

Hace tiempo que tenemos viendo cómo muchas empresas grandes y pequeñas, están usando el trabajo de artistas independientes sin su permiso y, obviamente sin pagar por usarlo, y esto siempre inicia una conversación acerca de la diferencia entre estar inspirado por y copiar el trabajo de alguien, por lo tanto, decidimos compartir nuestros pensamientos sobre este asunto.

No hay nada nuevo bajo el sol, no hay nada original, estamos constantemente reutilizando, reciclando, construyendo y creando sobre las ideas de otras personas, copiamos de la naturaleza, literatura, arquitectura, música, películas, fotografía, moda, etc... es la forma en que funciona el mundo. Como jóvenes artistas y/o profesionales todos en un momento copiamos y tratamos de imitar y emular el trabajo y el estilo de las personas que admiramos y a las que aspiramos ser como, y está bien copiar a nuestros héroes, es la manera en la que aprendemos. Incluso los grandes maestros imitaban a los que vinieron antes que ellos, recordamos haber leído acerca de cómo la mayor parte de las primeras obras de Dalí eran copias de pinturas impresionistas porque admiraba tanto a los impresionistas, pero finalmente encontró su camino y su propio estilo. Del mismo modo todos nosotros en el proceso de practicar y copiar las obras que nos inspiran empezamos a encontrar nuestra propia voz e insertar nuestro propio punto de vista en nuestro trabajo, desarrollando así nuestro propio estilo.

¿Cuándo cruzamos la línea entre la inspiración y la imitación?

Todos hemos sido culpables en algún momento de nuestras carreras de acercarnos demasiado a nuestras inspiraciones, sin darnos cuenta incluso que hemos creado prácticamente una copia de la obra de otra persona. Esto no es aceptable, especialmente si se trataba de un trabajo profesional por el que nos pagaron, pero al menos lo hicimos con la mejor de las intenciones, a pesar de que podría haber tenido repercusiones en nuestras carreras si nos hubieran acusado de plagio. Por otro lado es posible que dos personas que no se conocen y que viven en diferentes rincones del mundo, lleguen a la misma solución a un problema específico y la ejecuten de manera similar. Sin embargo, no está bien intencionalmente copiar el trabajo de otra persona y presentarlo como nuestro, y peor aún recibir una paga por ello, esto no sólo es moralmente incorrecto también es ilegal.

También, vamos a sacar esto del camino, si vas a copiar el trabajo de otras personas como una práctica para mejorar, no tienes que hacerlo público, no lo publiques en tu blog o página web y no lo compartas en las redes sociales, copia en privado. Si tienes que compartirlo en las redes sociales (nunca "tienes" que compartir nada en las redes sociales) da crédito, di que esta es tu versión o una copia de la obra de esta persona, o menciona a la persona como tu inspiración, pero nunca lo compartas como tuyo.

Entonces, ¿Cómo podemos evitar imitar el trabajo que nos inspira?

Ahora, lo que podemos hacer para evitar imitar en lugar de ser inspirados por los demás es "Robar Como Un Artista". Esta frase acuñada por Austin Kleon en su libro del mismo título (si no has leído este libro todavía, te recomendamos que lo hagas, no importa si no eres artista se puede aplicar a cualquier profesión, no podemos recomendar este libro lo suficiente, de hecho ya lo recomendamos aquí), básicamente significa que está bien copiar, como ya establecimos anteriormente, pero es importante saber a quién copiar, qué copiar y cómo copiar, como dijo Jan-Luc Godard "Lo importante no es de dónde sacas las cosas, sino a dónde las llevas."

Para evitar imitar debemos:

1. Robar no sólo de una persona, sino de muchas, de todos los que nos han inspirado y de las personas que los han inspirado a ellos. Mientras más diversa sea nuestra inspiración, menos nuestro trabajo se parecerá a la obra de cualquier persona en concreto. Identificar lo que nos inspira específicamente acerca de cada uno de sus trabajos y tomar cosas diferentes de cada uno de ellos.

2. Robar no sólo el trabajo de aquellos a quienes admiramos, sino también el pensamiento y el proceso detrás de su trabajo, tenemos que entrenar nuestros ojos, para observar y estudiar su trabajo y así aprender a mirar las cosas de la manera en que ellos lo hacen. Emularlos tan profundamente que sus técnicas mezcladas con nuestra experiencia y conocimientos se conviertan en nuestras propias.

3. Pedir retroalimentación a alguien de nuestra confianza, preguntarles lo que piensan acerca de lo que acabamos de hacer, si les recuerda a algo que ya han visto, revelarles nuestra inspiración y preguntarles si se parece a nuestro trabajo, si contestan que sí a una o ambas de estas preguntas, es tiempo de repensar nuestro trabajo y hacer cambios apropiados, averiguar lo que podemos añadir para que sea más nuestro.

4. Practicar nuestro oficio y luego practicar un poco más. La práctica hace progreso, mientras más veces copiamos más la copia se convertirá en nuestra, ya que cada copia será diferente a la anterior.

5. Usar nuestra propia voz para transformar su trabajo, es probable que estés en una etapa en tu carrera en la que no has encontrado tu voz todavía, es por eso que estás copiando en primer lugar, pero aún así puedes tratar de ser auténtico y concienzudo en tu trabajo. Como dijimos en este post sobre la creatividad, esta es una frase que mucha gente repite pero no muchos viven en su día a día. Tenemos que preguntarnos ¿Estamos haciendo algo porque creemos en ello o estamos copiando porque está de moda y sabemos que va a vender? Sobre este punto, ya mencionamos anteriormente sobre cómo Dalí copiaba a sus héroes, más tarde en su vida obtuvo el permiso del Museo del Louvre para ir y hacer una copia de La Encajera de Johannes Vermeer, y sólo hay que decir que la copia de Dalí no se parece en nada a La Encajera, luego hizo muchas copias más, algunas se parecen más a la de Vermeer que otras, pero el punto es que siempre inyectó su punto de vista y anteriores ideas y experiencias en sus copias, y siempre especificó que eran interpretaciones de la pintura de Vermeer y nunca asumió la idea original como suya.

En resumen, es imposible que nuestro trabajo no se vea influenciado por todo lo que nos rodea, incluyendo las personas a las que admiramos, lo importante a tener en cuenta es que está bien copiar en privado como una práctica para perfeccionar nuestras habilidades, nunca reclamar estas copias como propias y venderlas, diversificar nuestras fuentes de inspiración, buscar inspiración no sólo en los contemporáneos, sino también en la historia y finalmente practicar tanto como podamos.
