Verona: The City of Romeo & Juliet

Verona is the most visited tourist destination in the entire northern Italy. It was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and is one of the most romantic cities thanks to Shakespeare. Surrounded by hills and crossed by the Adige river is full of historical attractions and romantic places.
We decided to include it in our last trip and the truth is that spending the day walking through its streets was one of the best decisions, definitely love it.
We stayed in a little cute hotel just across the street from the Piazza Erbe, every little street of the city center takes you to this square, every day except Sundays there is a market on the square where you can find fruits and handcrafts, you can find here the fountain of the Madonna Verona and the Lamberti Tower (with beautiful views of the city). Shops and restaurants surround the square; in the evenings you can enjoy good food and drinks or just sit and enjoy the atmosphere and watch people walking by.
Another place you will go crazy about is the Piazza Bra where the Verona Arena is located, home of concerts, operas and shows, super well preserved and undoubtedly one of the greatest attractions of the city. In the center of the square is a beautiful fountain surrounded by greenery, you can find cafes and restaurants around the square, there is a beautiful energy in this city that makes you understand why it was chosen as the setting for Romeo and Juliet. In the southern side of the square is the neoclassical Palazzo Barbieri and on the northern side is the famous Liston the place par excellence for evening walks. At the end of the Via Liston is Via Manzzini the most elegant street of the city that ends at Via Capello where Juliet's House is located at number 23, another place you have to visit as corny as it may seem.

Juliet’s House is frequently visited by teenagers and young people, and here you will find the famous balcony and walls full of messages and love notes. Tradition says you should put your hand on one of Juliet's statue's "boobs" if you want to return to Verona or if you want to find "the love of your life," our "guilty pleasure" of this trip was to grab the famous “boob” and take our picture… Yes we want to return.
A place we enjoyed because we are nature lovers was I Giardini Giusti, these beautiful gardens full of stairs, statues, flowers and trees have spectacular views of the city, 100% recommended. We also love gelatos and we ate a lot of them, Amorino are our favorites, they serve the ice cream shaped as a beautiful rose, isn’t that a great idea? especially in a city for lovers, also you must try their ice cream filled macarons, delicious!
The Duomo di Verona, this beautiful romanesque cathedral was reconstructed in the 12th century after an earthquake destroyed the original dating from the 8th century, has gothic and romanesque architectural elements and a beautiful belfry. Another religious place you should not miss is the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Lourdes situated on a hill, a place of peace and beauty, from there you can enjoy beautiful views of Verona.
Enjoying a walk along the Adige riverside and to cross the Ponte Pietra one of the oldest and from there take some beautiful pictures of the sunset. We had dinner at a restaurant on the riverside on a balcony full of flowers listening to the running waters.
On our last day we visited the Roman Theater and the Archaeological Museum. The theater is built on a small hill, the museum is in the old convent of Saint Jerome just up the hill. It is one of the most important archaeological monuments of the city since it was built in the late 1st century B.C. In the museum you can find roman sculptures, mosaics and more. From there you can also enjoy beautiful views of the river and city.
Verona has something for all types of travelers, romantic gardens, beautiful monuments, wine, food, you will not be disappointed, there are many activities and places we didn’t get to visit so we’ll definitely be back.
Verona la ciudad de Romeo y Julieta

Esta hermosa ciudad del norte de Italia,
fue declarada Patrimonio De La Humanidad por la UNESCO, y es una de las ciudades más
románticas gracias a Shakespeare. Rodeada de colinas y cruzada por el río
Adigio está llena de atractivos históricos y lugares románticos.
Decidimos incluirla en nuestro último
viaje y la verdad es que pasarse el día caminando por sus calles fue una de las
mejores decisiones, definitivamente la amamos.
Nos quedamos en un pequeño hotel muy
lindo con atenciones excelentes justo frente a la Piazza Erbe, cada callecita
del centro de la ciudad te lleva a esta plaza, todos los días menos los
domingos se abre un mercado donde puedes encontrar frutas y artesanias,
aquí puedes ver la fuente de la Madonna Verona y la Torre Lamberti (con vistas
hermosas de la ciudad). La plaza está rodeada de tiendas y restaurantes, y en las
noches puedes disfrutar de buena comida y tragos o solo sentarte a disfrutar
del ambiente y las personas.
Otro lugar que te volverá loco es la
Piazza Bra donde está localizada la Arena de Verona hogar de grandes
conciertos, óperas y espectáculos, súper bien conservada sin duda una de las grandes
atracciones de la ciudad. En el centro de la plaza hay una hermosa fuente
rodeada de vegetación, alrededor de la plaza se encuentran cafés y restaurantes,
hay una energía hermosa en esta ciudad que te hace entender el por qué fue
elegida como el escenario de Romeo y Julieta. En el lado sur de la plaza se
encuentra el Palacio Barbieri de estilo neoclásico y en el lado norte está el famoso Liston el lugar por
excelencia para paseos nocturnos. Al final de la calle Liston está la Via
Manzzini la calle más elegante de la ciudad que termina en la Via Capello donde
en el #23 se encuentra la Casa de Julieta otro lugar que no puedes dejar de
visitar por más cursi que te parezca.
La casa de Julieta es muy visitada por
jóvenes y adolescentes, aquí encontrarás el famoso balcón y paredes llenas de
mensajes y notas de amor. La tradición dice que debes poner tu mano sobre una
“teta” de la estatua de Julieta y desear volver a Verona o si deseas encontrar “el
amor de tu vida”, nuestro “guilty pleasure” de este viaje ha sido nuestra foto
agarrando la famosa teta…. Sí, queremos volver.
Un lugar que nos encantó porque somos
amantes de la naturaleza fue I Giardini Giusti, estos hermosos jardines llenos de
escalinatas, estatuas, flores y arbóles tienen unas vistas espectaculares de la
ciudad, 100% recomendado. También nos encantan los gelatos y comimos muchos, Amorino nuestros
favoritos, te preparan el helado en forma de una hermosa rosa en un cono ¿No es una idea
genial? sobre todo en una ciudad para enamorados, además debes probar sus
macarones rellenos de helado, simplemente deliciosos.
El Duomo di Verona, esta hermosa catedral
estilo románico fue resconstruída en el siglo 12 después de que un terremoto destruyera la original que databa del siglo 8, tiene elementos arquitectónicos
góticos y románicos, y cuenta con un hermoso campanario. Otro lugar religioso que
no debes perderte es el Santuario de la Madonna de Lourdes situado en una
colina, un lugar lleno de paz y belleza, desde allí también hay hermosas vistas
de Verona.
Disfrutar de un paseo por la rivera del
río Adigio, cruzar el Ponte Pietra, uno de los más viejos y pintorescos y desde
allí tomar unas hermosas fotografías del atardecer. Nosotros cenamos en un
restaurante a la orilla del río en un balcón lleno de flores y plantas, escuchando
el agua correr.
Ya en nuestro ultimo día visitamos el
Teatro Romano y el Museo Arqueológico. El teatro está construído bajo una
pequeña colina, el museo está dentro del Viejo Convento de San Jerónimo justo arriba de la colina. Es uno de los
monumentos arqueológicos más relevantes de la ciudad ya que se construyó a
finales del siglo 1 A.C. En el museo se encuentran esculturas romanas, mosaicos
y más. Desde allí también se disfrutan unas hermosas vistas del río y la ciudad.
Verona tiene algo para todo tipo de
viajero, jardines románticos, monumentos hermosos, vino, comida, no te decepcionará,
hay muchas actividades que no hicimos y lugares que no conocimos así que definitivamente
volveremos.
