The Worst Advice We've Ever Received

Hasn't it happened to you as an entrepreneur, a freelancer, small business owner or when you are starting a new project that everyone has an advice to give you? The truth is that people love to give advice, it is the perfect excuse to prove that they care and to give their support; sometimes that advice is really helpful and supportive but other times it’s just wrong or misguided or it comes with a hidden agenda; wether it came from our BFF, family members or a complete stranger we all have received bad advice some time.
Being a freelancer or entrepreneur can be overwhelming at the beginning and some advices can be anxiety inducing or point you in the wrong direction.
Several months ago we read a quote posted by a friend on social media, that says: “If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later.” We think this is one of the worst advices ever, trying to do something you really don't know how to do or something you've only read about, will only lead you to mediocrity, it won't be good quality work because the first time we do or try something new the result is rarely good enough. Actions and consequences are a packaged deal, so we need to be careful about the advice we follow because everything we do will have a response and in terms of work that also can mean lossing money, clients and your reputation.
We often see people who do exactly this, they see a good idea on the Internet or maybe something a coleague or a competitor is doing and immidiately they try to copy them and start doing the same things without having any preparation or prior experience. We are not saying that you shouldn't try new things, far from it, what we think is that it is better to first learn and practice something in order to be good at it and then you'll be able to offer your clients good quality work and/or service.

¿No te ha pasado cómo emprendedor, trabajador independiente o cuando estas empezando un nuevo proyecto que todo el mundo tiene un consejo para darte? Lo cierto es que las personas aman dar consejos, es la excusa perfecta para demostrar que el otro les importa y que tratan de ayudar, algunos de estos consejos son realmente de ayuda y soporte pero algunas veces simplemente son muy poco acertados, mal dirigidos o a veces tienen una intensión oculta.
Trabajar por cuenta propia o emprender algún negocio puede ser
abrumador al principio y algunos consejos lo único que harán será causarte
ansiedad o dirigirte por la dirección equivocada.
Meses atrás leímos una publicación en redes sociales de una amiga que decía: “Si
alguien te ofrece una gran oportunidad pero no estás seguro de poder hacerlo,
di que sí y entonces aprende cómo hacerlo después.” Nosotras creemos que este es
uno de los peores consejos que puedes recibir, hacer algo que realmente no sabes cómo hacer o sobre lo que únicamente has leído, sólo te llevará por el camino de
la mediocridad, las acciones y las consecuencias vienen juntas en el mismo paquete así
que necesitamos ser cuidadosos con los consejos que seguimos porque todo lo
que hacemos tendrá una respuesta y tratándose de trabajo eso pudiera significar
pérdida de dinero, clientes y también de tu reputación.
Muy a menudo vemos personas haciendo cosas como ésta, ven una
buena idea en Internet o algo que algún colega o competidor está haciendo e inmediatamente tratan de copiarlo y
hacerlo sin ninguna preparación o experiencia previa. No estamos diciendo que no
deberías intentar cosas nuevas, lejos de eso, lo que pensamos es que es mejor primero aprender y practicar para
poder ser bueno en algo y después poder ofrecer a tus clientes un trabajo y/o servicio de buena calidad.
