Art We Love: Carson Ellis

Carson Ellis is a Canada born American illustrator, author and artist based in Oregon Portland, where she lives with her writer-musician husband, Colin Meloy, their two children, and a menagerie. She is best known for her children's book illustrations and her album art.
She studied painting at the University of Montana, where she met her husband, and began her career as a fine artist in California where she exhibited an oil paintings solo show at a gallery in San José, her first illustration work was for Colin Meloy's college band Tarkio, for which she designed gig posters.
She has illustrated a number of children's books including bestsellers "The Mysterious Benedict Society" by Trenton Lee Stewart, "The Composer Is Dead" by Lemony Snicket, and "The Wildwood Chronicles" in collaboration with her husband, Colin Meloy. Carson has been awarded silver medals by the Society of Illustrators for her work on "Wildwood Imperium" and on "Dillweed's Revenge" by Florence Parry Heide, and in 2016 she received a Caldecott Honor for "Du Iz Tak?". She's the illustrator-in-residence for Colin's band, The Decemberists, and received a Grammy nomination in 2016 for the design of their last LP, "What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World". She's also an occasional maker of editorial illustration, having worked for The New York Times, Poetry Magazine, and The New Yorker. Throughout the past decade and a half, she has exhibited original artwork in Portland, OR, at Nationale, PDX Contemporary Art, Basil Hallward Gallery, and Motel.
