Art We Love: Benjamin Lacombe
10/10/2018Benjamin Lacombe is a French author and illustrator living and working in Paris with his dogs, Virgile and Lisbeth, who are always sneaking into his books. He is one of the head representatives of the new French illustration.
In 2001, he attended the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD) in Paris, where he pursued his artistic training. While in school, he also worked in advertising and animation and published his first graphic novel and several other illustrated books at the age of 19.
His final school project, Cerise Griotte (Cherry and Olive), which he wrote and illustrated in its entirety, became his first children’s book and was published by Seuil Jeunesse in March 2006. It was published the following year by Walker Books (USA) and listed as one of Time Magazine’s 10 best children’s book in 2007. Since then, he has written and illustrated many books. Several of these have been translated and released all over the world: Les Amants Papillons (The Butterfly Lovers), Généalogie d’Une Sorcière (Genealogy of a Witch), La Mélodie des Tuyaux (Pipe Song), Il Etait Une Fois... (Once upon a Time...), Les Contes Macabres (Tales of the Macabre) and L’Herbier des Fées (The Fairy Herbarium).
He regularly exhibits his works all over the world, most prominently with the following galleries: Ad Hoc Art (New York), Dorothy Circus (Rome), Maruzen (Tokyo), Nucleus (Los Angeles), and Daniel Maghen Gallery (Paris).

En 2001, asistió a la École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (ENSAD) en París, donde realizó su formación artística. Mientras estaba en la escuela, también trabajó en publicidad y animación y publicó su primera novela gráfica y varios otros libros ilustrados a la edad de 19 años.
Su último proyecto escolar, Cerise Griotte (Cereza y Oliva), que escribió e ilustró en su totalidad, se convirtió en su primer libro para niños y fue publicado por Seuil Jeunesse en marzo de 2006. Fue publicado el año siguiente por Walker Books (EE.UU.), y catalogado como uno de los 10 mejores libros para niños de la revista Time en 2007.
