7 Books that Will Give You Hope & Restore Your Faith in Humanity

Hi, we hope you're having an amazing and safe holiday season.

With everything that is going on around the world, the pandemic and how most of our countries' "leaders" have failed us, how some of our fellow humans seem to not care about others, especially those most vulnerable and don't seem to care about the environment and other living beings either With all the hate, prejudices, and intolerance around us, even in people that we know, extremism resurging right and left... there's so much the list seems neverending; with all the uncertainty, anxiety, and heartbreak that we've been living through it's pretty easy to feel hopeless and discouraged about the future of humanity.

In times like these, we can turn to books to find comfort and solace, after all, books basically tell stories about the human condition and humans' relations to others. By reading books we often realise that we are not alone, and can empathize with others going through the same thing we are or with others with a different reality than ours, and that unites us and inspires us not to give up hope and to keep being kind and empathetic, and to spread love and compassion, and keep fighting the good fight because it is worth it, because there are good people in this world and there are leaders who care, and as Linus Baker says in The House in the Cerulean Sea (one of the books on this list): "Hate is loud, but I think you'll learn it's because it's only a few people shouting, desperate to be heard." There really are more empathetic and caring people than there are indifferent, there is so much more love and kindness than hate.

If people got you questioning, where is the love? then you need to read the books on this list. These books will make you smile, laugh out loud, cry, and smile again, we guarantee you that they will give you all the feels and all the warmth and fuzzies.

A couple of these books we read a while back and others we read recently during the pandemic which have given us a much-needed reprieve from reality. You'll notice that one of these is a young adult and three are middle-grade books, we've found that children's books often deal with topics most adults have forgotten, don't let the fact that they were written for children stop you from reading them, they teach lessons that are as important to adults as they are for children, they are also beautifully written, and of course, they're perfect to read with your kids if you are a parent.

1- Wonder by R.J. Palacio: This book tells the story of what happens when August Pullman, a kid born with a facial difference that, up until now, has been homeschooled, starts 5th grade at Beecher Prep, a mainstream school. He wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. Ultimately this book is about kindness, empathy, compassion, acceptance, growing through adversity, and the courage of friendship. It is a beautiful book that will make you cry and smile and that will give you hope. (We included it in our Summer 2017 Seasons of Books reading list)

2- I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak: Ed Kennedy is an underage cabdriver, your less-than-average joe, who lives a life of peaceful routine and apathy until he inadvertently stops a bank robbery and is praised as a local hero. That's when he receives a playing card in the mail: the ace of diamonds. This is the first message. Four more will follow. And that's when Ed becomes the messenger. Chosen to care, he makes his way through town helping others and as we follow him through his journey from the average joe to messenger, we see him grow emotionally, by touching other people's lives he finds the purpose in his, his own way of being great. This book teaches us that anyone, no matter how ordinary, can be great, that by helping others we gain more than the person we're helping, and that it is worth it to make an effort to connect with others instead of going through each other lives with indifference. 3- A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman: Ove is a curmudgeon and grumpy old man, who his neighbours call "the bitter neighbour from hell", but behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness. When a boisterous young family moves in next door to Ove they turn his solitary world on its head and change him to his very foundation. This is a charming, comical and heartwarming tale about the profound impact one life has on countless others. 4- Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer: When Nine-year-old Oskar Schell's father is killed in the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Centre, he sets out to solve the mystery of a key he discovers in his father's closet. This secret mission will take him through the five boroughs of New York and will bring him into contact with survivors of all sorts who will teach him, from their personal experiences, how you can survive with love and in pain. 5- Echo by Pam Muñoz Ryan: Otto, lost and alone in a forbidden forest, is rescued by three mysterious sisters trapped there by a witch's curse, and suddenly finds himself entwined in a puzzling quest involving a prophecy, a promise, and a harmonica. He promises to help break the curse by carrying the sisters' spirits out of the forest in a harmonica and passing the instrument along when the time is right. Decades later, Friedrich in Germany, Mike in Pennsylvania, and Ivy in California each, in turn, become interwoven when the very same harmonica lands in their lives. Each of them recognizes that there's something special about the harmonica, not only in its sound but in its power to fill them with courage and hope. Sad at times, this uplifting and hopeful novel, shows us how through perseverance and faith the characters write their own happy endings, and it will stay with you long after you finish it.

6- The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune: Linus Baker, a solitary forty-year-old Case Worker at the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth, spends his days overseeing the well-being of children in government-sanctioned orphanages. He is unexpectedly summoned by Extremely Upper Management and given a curious and highly classified assignment: to travel to an orphanage in a magical island where six dangerous magical children reside and determine whether these children are likely to bring about the end of the world. Arthur Parnassus, their caretaker, will do anything to keep his wards safe. This is an enchanting story, about the profound experience of discovering an unlikely family in an unexpected place, and ultimately about kindness, acceptance, and celebrating differences, it is sweet and comforting and it will warm your heart. 7- A Boy Called Christmas by Matt Haig: Its publisher calls this book a mix between Lemony Snicket and Klaus, and it is spot on. This is the story of an eleven-year-old boy, named Nikolas -nicknamed Christmas-, who lives in a forest with his father. When his father is recruited to be part of an expedition to the North Pole and then goes missing, Nikolas decides to travel there to save him. What ensues is a tale of adventure, snow, kidnapping, elves, more snow, and an eleven-year-old boy called Nikolas, who isn't afraid to believe in magic and how he went to become Father Christmas. This is a witty, warm, and magical story about kindness and giving, that proves that nothing is impossible, the word we use to describe it is "cutiful" (cute + beautiful), it will give you all the feels, and as it is a Christmas book, now is the perfect time to read it and let it enchant you.

Hola, esperamos que estés pasando una genial y segura temporada de fiestas.

Con todo lo que está sucediendo alreadedor del mundo, la pandemia y cómo la mayoría de los "líderes" de nuestros países nos han fallado, cómo algunos de nuestros semejantes parecen no preocuparse por los demás, especialmente los más vulnerables y no parece importarles el medio ambiente y otros seres vivos tampoco, con todo el odio, los prejuicios y la intolerancia que nos rodean, incluso en personas a las que conocemos, el extremismo resurgiendo a diestra y siniestra... hay tanto que la lista parece interminable; con toda la incertidumbre, ansiedad y angustia que hemos estado viviendo es bastante fácil sentirse desesperanzado y desanimado por el futuro de la humanidad.

En momentos como estos, podemos recurrir a los libros para encontrar confortación y consuelo; después de todo, los libros básicamente cuentan historias sobre la condición humana y las relaciones de los humanos con los demás. Al leer libros muchas veces nos damos cuenta de que no estamos solos, y podemos empatizar con otros que están pasando por lo mismo que nosotros o con otros con una realidad muy distinta a la nuestra, y eso nos une y nos inspira a no perder la esperanza y a seguir siendo amables y empáticos, y a difundir amor y compasión, y seguir peleando la buena batalla porque vale la pena, porque hay gente buena en este mundo y hay líderes que se preocupan, y como dice Linus Baker en La casa en el mar Cerúleo (uno de los libros en esta lista): "El odio es escandaloso, pero creo que aprenderás que es porque son solo unas pocas personas gritando, desesperadas por ser escuchadas". Realmente hay más gente empática y solidaria que indiferente, hay mucho más amor y bondad que odio.

Si la gente te tiene cuestionando, ¿dónde está el amor? entonces necesitas leer los libros de esta lista. Estos libros te harán sonreír, reír a carcajadas, llorar y sonreír de nuevo, te garantizamos que te darán todas las sensaciones y todos los sentimientos cálidos y acogedores.

Un par de estos libros los leímos hace un tiempo y otros los leímos recientemente durante la pandemia y nos han dado un muy necesitado respiro de la realidad. Notarás que uno de estos libros es joven adulto y tres de grado medio, hemos descubierto que los libros para niños a menudo tratan temas que la mayoría de los adultos han olvidado, no dejes que el hecho de que fueron escritos para niños te impida leerlos, estos libros enseñan lecciones que son tan importantes para los adultos como para los niños, también están hermosamente escritos y, por supuesto, son perfectos para leer con tus hijos si eres padre/madre.

Palacio: Este libro cuenta la historia de lo que sucede cuando August Pullman, un niño nacido con una diferencia facial que, hasta ahora, ha sido educado en casa, comienza el quinto grado en Beecher Prep, una escuela convencional. No quiere nada más que ser tratado como un niño común, pero sus nuevos compañeros de clase no pueden superar el extraordinario rostro de Auggie. 2- Cartas cruzadas por Markus Zusak: Ed kennedy es un taxista menor de edad, un joven menos que el promedio, que vive una vida de apatía y rutina pacífica hasta que inadvertidamente detiene un robo a un banco y es elogiado como un héroe local. Ahí es cuando recibe una carta de juego por correo: el as de diamantes. Este es el primer mensaje. Le seguirán cuatro más. Y ahí es cuando Ed se convierte en el mensajero. Elegido para cuidar, se abre camino por la ciudad ayudando a los demás y mientras lo seguimos a través de su viaje de joe promedio a mensajero, lo vemos crecer emocionalmente, al tocar la vida de otras personas, encuentra el propósito en la suya, su propia manera de ser grandioso. Promete ayudar a romper la maldición llevando los espíritus de las hermanas fuera del bosque en una armónica y pasando el instrumento a otra persona cuando sea el momento adecuado.
