Art We Love: Diana Fayt

Diana Fayt is a Californian painter, sculptor, printmaker, and clayer of Hungarian origin living and working in Portland, Oregon. She is a graduate of the California College of the Arts (formerly California College of Arts and Crafts), and her body of work is inspired by the trinkets and stories she has collected from each new place she ventured in her travels around the globe, she sees each of her pieces as a travelogue of the human spirit, carved out of the earth to be viewed through the unique lenses of each observer's personal history.
She calls her process “etching in clay”, mimicking traditional drypoint etching processes used in printmaking but with a twist, she employ’s the use of clay, underglazes, stains and glaze instead of zinc, paper, and ink, treating her ceramic surfaces as the actual etching plate. All of her drawings are done freehand, with the addition of her signature graphic markings, radiating shapes and random scratches. Each piece is individually hand-built or slipcast with the use of molds that she makes herself.
Diana’s work can be found in both public and private art collections in the United States and around the world, and she has been featured on numerous magazines and publications such as Ceramics Monthly, Zakka, Lee, Mademoiselle (Japan), The Journal of Australian Ceramics, American Craft, Sunset Magazine, San Francisco 7×7, “Encore! The New Artisans, Part Two” and “Crafting a Meaningful Home”.

Diana Fayt es una pintora, escultora y grabadora californiana de origen húngaro que vive y trabaja en Portland, Oregón. Se graduó de la Escuela de Artes de California (anteriormente California College of Arts and Crafts), y su cuerpo de trabajo está inspirado en los recuerdos y las historias que ha recopilado de cada nuevo lugar al que se aventuró en sus viajes por el mundo, ella ve cada una de sus obras como un diario de viaje del espíritu humano, tallado en la tierra para ser visto a través de las lentes únicas de la historia personal de cada observador.
Ella llama a su proceso "grabado en arcilla", imitando los procesos tradicionales de grabado en punta seca utilizados en grabado, pero con un giro, emplea el uso de arcilla, color antes de esmaltar, manchas y esmaltes en lugar de zinc, papel y tinta, tratando sus superficies cerámicas como si fueran placsa de grabado reales. Todos sus dibujos están hechos a mano alzada, con la adición de sus marcas gráficas distintivas, formas radiales y rayas aleatorias. Cada pieza se construye individualmente a mano o es moldeada con el uso de moldes que hace ella misma.
