Gemma Koomen is a freelance illustrator and artist living and working in Northumberland, United Kingdom.

Her love for painting began as a child when she would draw with pencils and crayons on the backs of her father's (also an artist) rejected screenprints, on the walls and underneath the furniture. She studied Fine Art Photography at Glasgow School of Art and then went to do a Masters in Photography but after a few months, she felt it wasn't right for her and made the switch to Illustration. As her final project, she made an illustrated website, which lent to her getting a lot of work for web and graphic design as well as the occasional illustration job, from friends and then through word of mouth. For a lot of her career, she worked with clients as a freelance photographer and on web design and branding projects, but through the years, the love of drawing and painting remained, and inspired her to start illustrating freelance full-time after having her two daughters.

She works primarily by hand in gouache, ink, and the occasional color pencil and is inspired by nature, nostalgia, simplicity, vintage paraphernalia, old black and white photography, rambling walks, and conversations with her two young daughters.

Gemma Koomen es una ilustradora y artista independiente que vive y trabaja en Northumberland, Reino Unido.

Su amor por la pintura comenzó cuando era niña cuando dibujaba con lápices y crayones al revés de las láminas impresas rechazadas de su padre (también artista), en las paredes y debajo de los muebles. Estudió Bellas Artes en Fotografía en la Escuela de Arte de Glasgow y luego comenzó un Máster en Fotografía, pero después de unos meses, sintió que no era lo correcto para ella e hizo el cambio a Ilustración. Como su proyecto final, hizo un sitio web ilustrado, que se prestó a que consiguiera mucho trabajo para diseño web y gráfico, así como ocasionales trabajos de ilustración, a través de sus amigos y luego de boca en boca. Durante gran parte de su carrera, trabajó con clientes como fotógrafa independiente y en proyectos de diseño web y de marca, pero a través de los años, el amor por el dibujo y la pintura se mantuvo, y la inspiró a comenzar a ilustrar a tiempo completo como autónoma después de tener a sus dos hijas.

Trabaja principalmente a mano en témpera, tinta y el ocasional lápiz de color y se inspira en la naturaleza, la nostalgia, la sencillez, las parafernalias vintage, las viejas fotografías en blanco y negro, los paseos y las conversaciones con sus dos hijas.
