Hi, Summer is here again, and to be honest, we're not so thrilled about it since we'll be having a heatwave until October. We've always thought that Winter was our least favorite season but it turns out that it is Summer. Right now, we envy you, friends located in the southern hemisphere. (Funny how we always end up talking about the weather as the preamble for our seasonal reading lists)

Nevertheless, Summer is a great season for reading because some of us get a break from work and can tackle our ever-growing TBR piles. We hope you can take a break this Summer and maybe travel a little. If you don't, let a good book take you someplace else and abandon reality for a while. Better yet, you could do it under the cool shadow of a tree, by the pool, or near the sea.

These are the books with which we'll be doing some armchair travelling during Summer, along with their publishers' descriptions. There are books for different tastes here. Enjoy and read with us... and, by the way, if you happen to be located in the southern hemisphere, please know that we choose the books for our Seasons of Books lists because we feel they vibe with the season. But, of course, you can read them at any time of the year, or check out our Winter reading list with books we feel fit the wintry vibe.

1- Circe by Madeline Miller: In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child -- not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power -- the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves. 2- World Travel: An Irreverent Guide by Anthony Bourdain and Laurie Woolever: Anthony Bourdain saw more of the world than nearly anyone. His travels took him from the hidden pockets of his hometown of New York to a tribal longhouse in Borneo, from cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, Paris, and Shanghai to Tanzania’s utter beauty and the stunning desert solitude of Oman’s Empty Quarter—and many places beyond. In World Travel, a life of experience is collected into an entertaining, practical, fun and frank travel guide that gives readers an introduction to some of his favorite places—in his own words. Featuring essential advice on how to get there, what to eat, where to stay and, in some cases, what to avoid, World Travel provides essential context that will help readers further appreciate the reasons why Bourdain found a place enchanting and memorable. Supplementing Bourdain’s words are a handful of essays by friends, colleagues, and family that tell even deeper stories about a place, including sardonic accounts of traveling with Bourdain by his brother, Christopher; a guide to Chicago’s best cheap eats by legendary music producer Steve Albini, and more. Additionally, each chapter includes illustrations by Wesley Allsbrook. For veteran travelers, armchair enthusiasts, and those in between, World Travel offers a chance to experience the world like Anthony Bourdain.

3- The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith: It’s here, that we are introduced to the suave Tom Ripley, a young striver seeking to leave behind his past as an orphan bullied for being a “sissy.” Newly arrived in the heady world of Manhattan, Ripley meets a wealthy industrialist who hires him to bring his playboy son, Dickie Greenleaf, back from gallivanting in Italy. Soon Ripley’s fascination with Dickie’s debonair lifestyle turns obsessive as he finds himself enraged by Dickie’s ambivalent affections for Marge, a charming American dilettante, and Ripley begins a deadly game.

4- Georgie, All Along by Kate Clayborn: Longtime personal assistant Georgie Mulcahy has made a career out of putting others before herself. When an unexpected upheaval sends her away from her hectic job in L.A. and back to her hometown, Georgie must confront an uncomfortable truth: her own wants and needs have always been a disconcertingly blank page. But then Georgie comes across a forgotten artifact—a “friendfic” diary she wrote as a teenager, filled with possibilities she once imagined. To an overwhelmed Georgie, the diary’s simple, small-scale ideas are a lifeline—a guidebook for getting started on a new path. 6- Under The Tuscan Sun by Frances Mayes: Frances Mayes —widely published poet, gourmet cook, and travel writer—opens the door to a wondrous new world when she buys and restores an abandoned villa in the spectacular Tuscan countryside. In sensuous and evocative language, she brings the reader along as she discovers the beauty and simplicity of life in Italy. An accomplished cook and food writer, Mayes also creates dozens of delicious seasonal recipes from her traditional kitchen and simple garden, all of which she includes in the book.

7- Afterland by Lauren Beukes: Most of the men are dead. Three years after the pandemic known as The Manfall, governments still hold and life continues—but a world run by women isn't always a better place. Twelve-year-old Miles is one of the last boys alive, and his mother, Cole, will protect him at all costs. On the run after a horrific act of violence-and pursued by Cole's own ruthless sister, Billie—all Cole wants is to raise her kid somewhere he won't be preyed on as a reproductive resource or a sex object or a stand-in son. Someplace like home. To get there, Cole and Miles must journey across a changed America in disguise as mother and daughter. 8- Tiepolo Blue by James Cahill: Cambridge, 1994. Professor Don Lamb is a revered art historian at the height of his powers, consumed by the book he is writing about the skies of the Venetian master Tiepolo. However, his academic brilliance belies a deep inexperience of life and love. When an explosive piece of contemporary art is installed on the lawn of his college, it sets in motion Don’s abrupt departure from Cambridge to take up a role at a south London museum. There he befriends Ben, a young artist who draws him into the anarchic 1990s British art scene and the nightlife of Soho. Over the course of one long, hot summer, Don glimpses a liberating new existence. 9- Killers of a Certain Age by Deanna Raybourn: Billie, Mary Alice, Helen, and Natalie have worked for the Museum, an elite network of assassins, for forty years. Now their talents are considered old-school and no one appreciates what they have to offer in an age that relies more on technology than people skills. When the foursome is sent on an all-expenses paid vacation to mark their retirement, they are targeted by one of their own. Only the Board, the top-level members of the Museum, can order the termination of field agents, and the women realize they’ve been marked for death. Now to get out alive they have to turn against their own organization, relying on experience and each other to get the job done, knowing that working together is the secret to their survival. They’re about to teach the Board what it really means to be a woman—and a killer—of a certain age.

10- Happy Place by Emily Henry: Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college—they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now—for reasons they’re still not discussing—they don’t. They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends. Which is how they find themselves sharing a bedroom at the Maine cottage that has been their friend group’s yearly getaway for the last decade. Their annual respite from the world, where for one vibrant, blissful week they leave behind their daily lives; have copious amounts of cheese, wine, and seafood; and soak up the salty coastal air with the people who understand them most. Only this year, Harriet and Wyn are lying through their teeth while trying not to notice how desperately they still want each other. Because the cottage is for sale and this is the last week they’ll all have together in this place. They can’t stand to break their friends’ hearts, and so they’ll play their parts. Harriet will be the driven surgical resident who never starts a fight, and Wyn will be the laid-back charmer who never lets the cracks show. It’s a flawless plan (if you look at it from a great distance and through a pair of sunscreen-smeared sunglasses). After years of being in love, how hard can it be to fake it for one week... in front of those who know you best?

Hola, el verano está aquí otra vez y, para ser honestas, no estamos tan emocionadas porque tendremos una ola de calor hasta octubre. Siempre hemos pensado que el invierno era nuestra estación menos favorita pero resulta que es verano. En este momento los envidiamos a ustedes, amigos ubicados en el hemisferio sur. (Es curioso cómo siempre terminamos hablando del clima como preámbulo de nuestras listas de lectura estacionales)

Sin embargo, el verano es una gran temporada para leer porque algunos de nosotros tenemos un descanso del trabajo y podemos hacer frente a nuestras crecientes pilas de libros por leer. Esperamos que puedas tomarte un descanso este verano y tal vez viajar un poco. Si no lo haces, deja que un buen libro te lleve a otro lugar y abandona la realidad por un tiempo. Mejor aún, si puedes hacerlo bajo la fresca sombra de un árbol, junto a la piscina o cerca del mar.

1- Circe de Madeline Miller: En el palacio de Helios, dios del sol y el más poderoso de los titanes, nace una niña. Junto a su pareja, deberá entenderse con los diferentes personajes de la comarca, familiarizarse con el entorno y, al mismo tiempo, disfrutar de la gastronomía o de la simple dedicación al jardín. Desde el sugerente paisaje italiano, Frances Mayes propone al lector una auténtica evasión basada en el optimismo y el equilibrio humano. El libro, con sus múltiples ingredientes, que van desde las memorias a los viajes, pasando por la cocina mediterránea, nos recuerda, además de dibujar un universo de relaciones humanas, aquellos placeres de los cuales no podemos prescindir. Una vívida, delicada y entrañable inmersión sensorial en la sencilla, veraniega y plenamente natural Toscana, narrada con entrega y sensibilidad, en especial hacia el apartado culinario, por el cual la escritora siente especial devoción y que sin duda consigue transmitir, además de despertar sensaciones dormidas, el encanto por la vida rural.

7- Afterland de Lauren Beukes: La nueva normalidad es un mundo sin hombres. Una pandemia global. Un mundo cambiado. Una madre y su hijo a la fuga. Miles, de doce años, es uno de los últimos niños varones vivos. Cole, su madre, lo protegerá a toda costa de aquellos que buscan explotarlo para sus propios fines. Sin embargo, ahora las consideran «de la vieja escuela» y, como la tecnología importa más que la inteligencia, ya nadie valora su talento. Cuando las invitan a un crucero para celebrar su jubilación, estas no tardan en darse cuenta de que se han convertido en objetivo de la Junta del Museo, que ha ordenado eliminarlas. 10- Un lugar feliz de Emily Henry: Harriet y Wyn han sido la pareja perfecta desde que se conocieron de adolescentes. Son complementarios como la sal y la pimienta, el té y el limón, el aceite y el vinagre. Solo que ahora, por razones de las que todavía no hablan, ya no lo son. Rompieron hace cinco meses y todavía no se lo han dicho a sus mejores amigos. Por eso acaban compartiendo habitación en la casa de verano donde, desde hace una década, hacen una escapada al año todos juntos. En el transcurso de una semana luminosa y animada, se evaden del mundo, dejan atrás los problemas de la vida cotidiana, toman cantidades desmedidas de queso, vino y marisco, y se impregnan del salitre de la costa rodeados de las personas que mejor los entienden. Pero este año, Harriet y Wyn están mintiendo a conciencia mientras intentan ignorar lo mucho que todavía se quieren. Porque la casa está en venta, y esta es la última semana que podrán pasar allí. No quieren romperles el corazón a sus amigos contándoles la verdad, así que fingen que todo sigue igual.
