Wheel of Creative Constraints

For this year's last post in honour of Creativity Week, we're sharing this practical Wheel of Creative Constraints for you to exercise your creativity and boost your creative thinking abilities.
When faced with a creative project, whether personal or professional, you probably think as most of us do, that having complete creative freedom would be ideal: to do whatever you please, with whatever materials you want, in whatever time you want to take to accomplish it, etc. But the reality is that when dealing with an infinite amount of choices from which to choose, most of us get overwhelmed and therefore paralyzed and stuck, not knowing where to even begin.
The reality is that complete creative freedom doesn't exist, we are always limited by something whether it be the time or the materials at our disposal or even the limitations of our own knowledge and skills. But this isn't always a bad thing, like educator Brandon Rodríguez tells us in this TED-Ed animation, "constraints aren't the boundaries of creativity but its foundation." Constraints force us to do what we can with what we have which is incredibly helpful in problem-solving, they expand our brains in new directions. Constraints force us to figure out how to get past whatever is blocking us making us feel liberated instead of stuck.
To help you and ourselves practice how to deal with creative constraints we've come up with this useful Wheel of Creative Constraints, a kind of hybrid between the colour wheel and the wheel of fortune, which contains eight limitations in six categories: colour, actions, activities, materials, emotions, and time. Spin the wheel and do, create, make something with the six limitations it gives you or you could also choose which of the six limitations to work with, interpret them as you can, be as literal or as abstract as you wish, don't worry if the combination of limitations seems too random, remember that the core of creativity is to connect the seemingly unconnected. And finally, don't get too hung up on the final result, the important thing here is the process of ideation and creation, you don't have to share your result if you don't want to so don't worry if it is too foolish and/or ugly.

Para la última publicación de este año en honor a la Semana de la Creatividad, queremos compartir contigo esta práctica Rueda de Restricciones Creativas para que ejercites tu creatividad y aumentes tus habilidades de pensamiento creativo.
Cuando te enfrentas a un proyecto creativo, ya sea personal o profesional, probablemente pienses, como la mayoría de nosotros/as, que tener total libertad creativa sería lo ideal: hacer lo que quieras, con los materiales que quieras, en el tiempo que quieras dedicar para lograrlo, etc. Pero la realidad es que cuando nos enfrentamos a una cantidad infinita de opciones entre las que elegir, la mayoría de nosotros/as nos abrumamos y, por lo tanto, nos paralizamos y nos atascamos, sin saber ni por dónde empezar.
La realidad es que no existe una libertad creativa completa, siempre estamos limitados por algo, ya sea el tiempo o los materiales a nuestra disposición o incluso las limitaciones de nuestros propios conocimientos y habilidades. Pero esto no siempre es malo, como nos dice el educador Brandon Rodríguez en esta animación TED-Ed, "las limitaciones no son los límites de la creatividad, sino su base". Las restricciones nos obligan a hacer lo que podemos con lo que tenemos a nuestra disposición, lo cual es increíblemente útil para la resolución de problemas, expanden nuestro cerebro en nuevas direcciones. Las restricciones nos obligan a descubrir cómo superar lo que nos bloquea y hacernos sentir liberados en lugar de estancados.
Para ayudarte a ti y a nosotras mismas a practicar cómo lidiar con las restricciones creativas, hemos creado esta útil Rueda de Restricciones Creativas, una especie de híbrido entre la rueda de color y la rueda de la fortuna, que contiene ocho limitaciones en seis categorías: color, acciones, actividades, materiales, emociones y tiempo. Gira la rueda y haz, crea, fabrica algo con las seis limitaciones que te da o también puedes elegir con cuáles de las seis limitaciones trabajar, interprétalas como puedas, sé tan literal o abstracta/o como desees, no te preocupes si la combinación de limitaciones parece demasiado aleatoria, recuerda que la base de la creatividad es conectar lo aparentemente desconectado. Y finalmente, no te preocupes mucho por el resultado final, lo importante aquí es el proceso de ideación y creación, no tienes que compartir tu resultado si no quieres, así que no te preocupes si resulta demasiado alocado y/o feo.
