Art We Love: Jessica Watts

9/14/2016

Jessica Watts is an australian artist, living and working in Sydney. She received a Bachelor of Design with First Class Honours and the University Medal from the University of Technology Sydney in 1991. Upon graduating, she moved to New York where she enjoyed a successful career as a highly awarded advertising art director. During this time she started accepting commissions to create artworks for private clients.

Through her years working in advertising she collected all sorts of ephemera, so when she finally decided to work as a full time artist she had a wealth of collage material at hand. She paints predominantly in oils but her art is rooted in collage, because she finds there is an affection and tenderness in the re-use and re-purposing of things that once belonged to someone else. In 2013 she expanded her practice to include sculpture.

We're in love with her "Wallflower" series. You can follow her on Instagram and buy art prints of her paintings here.

9/13/2016

Val's birthday was this past weekend and she decided to make this beautiful cupcakes to celebrate. This recipe is adapted from Martha Stewart’s carrot cupcakes recipe, delicious and super easy.

You will need:

1 pound carrots, peeled and finely grated
3 large eggs, room temperature
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 cups sugar
1 1/2 cups of vegetable oil
1 vanilla bean, halved length-wise, seeds scraped and reserved (or 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract)
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon bakis soda
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

Let’s get to work!

1. Preheat oven to 325º F. Line standard cupcake tins with paper liners. Whisk together carrots, eggs, buttermilk, sugar, oil, vanilla-bean seeds. In another bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, baking poder, salt, cinnamon and ginger. Stir flour mixture into carrot mixture until well combined.

2. Divide batter evenly among lined cups or cupcake tin, filling each three-quarters full. Bake, rotating tins halfway through, until a cake tester inserted in centers comes out clean, 23 to 28 minutes. Transfer tins to wire racks to cool 10 minutes; turn out cupcakes onto racks and let cool completely. Cupcakes can be stored overnight at room temperature, or frozen up to 2 months, in airtight containers.

3. To finish, use a small offset spatula to spread cupcakes with a mound of frosting, we used a pastry bag to shape the moons.

For the cream cheese frosting you will need:

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperatura
12 ounces cream cheese, room temperatura
1 pound (4 cups) confectioners’ sugar, sifted
3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Food coloring

With an electric mixer on médium-high speed, beat butter and cream cheese until fluffy, 2 to 3 minutes. Reduce speed to low. Add sugar, 1/2 cup at a time, and then vanilla, and mix until smooth and combined, scraping down sides of bowl as needed.

Here it’s the result! We hope you like it!

3 huevos grandes, a temperatura ambiente

With Your Own Hands: Pom Pom Sandals

8/24/2016

Hello, you may know pom poms are this summer's hottest trend, so we decided to do this DIY pom poms sandals perfect for this hot days. We're sure you've seen them online or in stores and know they're kind of pricy, so what's better then to have a crafternoon and make your own, and be on trend and save a few bucks in the process.

You will need:

Scissors
Pair of sandals (old or new)
Needle and thread
Pom poms
Glue
Yarn (cotton or acrylic)
Fork

To make your pom poms:

1. Using a fork cut a small length of yarn and thread through the middle tine close to the base of the fork then wrap the yarn around the top of the fork about sixty times. Once you’ve done this tie a knot with the small length of yarn you threaded in the middle to secure, slide the ball of yarn off holding it by longest strings.

2. Snip each loop with a scissors and tie the longer pieces together tightly, finally cut each of the pieces and trim the ball to make sure every piece is roughly even.

3. Repeat step one and two with new yarn in different colors to create all your pom poms.

To make your sandals:

Finally it’s time to put your pom poms together, you can either sew, tie or glue them to your sandals. We decided to tie and glue to secure them and voilà done! Val wore them to the beach and they were a sensation.

If you decide to try this DIY please share it with us using #lalilucrafts so we can see.

☮☮☮
